Why Choose a Double Bed for One Child
By Brenda Reeves
Once a child outgrows nursery and toddler sized furniture, its time to redecorate and buy a bigger bed. The traditional choice is a twin bed, but there are many good reasons to choose a double bed instead. We’ll explore some of those reasons here. The Benefits of a Double Bed Buying a double bed now means that you will probably not have to buy another bed ever again for your child. A double bed offers a lot more width and length and as your child grows into his teens, he won’t outgrow a double bed as he would a twin bed. Also, a double bed offers more comfort and room to stretch out. In most cases you will have to replace a worn mattress and possible a box spring at some point, but if you choose a frame and headboard that is not juvenile in appearance, the bed can last until your son or daughter heads off to college. Making it Snug for Now That being said, a little child is bound to feel a bit lost in a big double bed. To make it more comfortable while he or she is still small, add a bed tent to create a snug little getaway. The bed tent will make a small child feel protected and secure. If you have trouble finding a bed tent for a double bed in local stores, you may have better luck with online sources; do a search for “custom children’s bedding”. Add Storage to Maximize Space Plan ahead and choose a double bed that offers pull out drawer so clothing, shoes, sports gear and other items can be stored under the bed. You can store nearly twice as much under a double bed compared to a twin bed. If you don’t find a bed with built-in storage appealing or in your price range, you can opt for under-bed storage containers instead. Many have wheels or casters so they are easy to pull in and out as needed. After your Child Moves Up A double bed is much more versatile than a standard twin bed and gives you lots of flexibility for future use. On the other hand, a twin bed will likely be handed down to another family or sold at a garage sale. It may be hard to imagine now, but at some point your child really will grow up and move away, either to college or some kind of independent life – if you’re lucky! The double bed will continue to provide great service whenever you have overnight guests, as it is perfect whether couples or a single person is visiting. If your child is away at college or comes home from time to time, he or she will also enjoy sleeping in a spacious double bed, especially if they have had to make due with a typical twin bed in a dorm room.
