What goes Great with Pizza?
By Brenda Reeves
With the average American gobbling up about 23 pounds of pizza per year, you may think that we live by pizza alone and there are those who swear they could live strictly on pizza and air. However, there are certain side dishes, desserts and beverages that can round out a good pizza – so to speak – and make it even more enjoyable. Side Dishes and Appetizers While pizza is very filling on its own, ask your favorite pizza delivery for side dishes or appetizers that can make pizza night a truly special event. For appetizers, items like bread sticks, wings, cheese sticks, deep fried mushrooms, grilled veggies, potato skins, fried shrimp or calamari, nachos, quesadillas and steamed clams are favorites. Choose one or two to please everyone in the crowd. For a side dish to pizza, salad can’t be beat: It’s light and refreshing and makes it easy to get your required veggies in one convenient serving. Choose from tossed green salad, chef salad, Greek salad, antipasto and more. Satisfying Beverages From soft drinks to alcoholic beverages, nearly everything goes well with pizza. The most popular option is soda, including colas, root beers, citrus sodas and other flavors in regular, diet and low sodium or caffeine free varieties. Choices are nearly without end in this department! You can also opt for fruit juices if you want a healthier choice. The healthiest choice of all is mineral water or ice water with a twist of lemon. For those who want to imbibe in spirits, beer is an all time favorite with pizza. You can drink your favorite light or dark American or local beer of course, but why not try an authentic Italian brew for something out of the ordinary? Of course, a good bottle of Chianti or your favorite wine is always an excellent choice with pizza and is the perfect pairing of two Italian classics. For those who want a lighter wine option, choose a wine cooler or mix white wine with sparkling water. The Perfect Ending There are those who live for dessert and those of us who avoid it like the plague in an effort to eliminate excess calories from our diets. But for an occasional splurge, a great dessert with hot coffee, tea or Italian cappuccino or espresso is a treat that is worth the indulgence. Your Issaquah pizza restaurant may offer luscious cheesecakes, pies, biscotti, cookies, pizelles or pastries to enjoy. Italian cannolli or Greek baklava are also special favorites that are worth the extra time spent on the treadmill the next morning. Cannolli is stuffed with sweet ricotta cheese and often swirled with chocolate chips, while baklava is a flaky pastry layered with honey and walnuts or pistachios. Tiramisu is also a favorite dessert featured by Italian restaurants and bakeries: Delicate layers of sponge cake are soaked in espresso and alternated with layers of a rich mousse filling made from mascarpone cheese. A sprinkling of sugared cocoa dresses the top layer. Yum! Photo credit to emilyandlindz.

During Lamaze class the instructor asked what is one of the healthiest foods you can eat during pregnancy. Everyone was a little surprised when she said pizza because with the right toppings it can contain all of the 5 basic food groups. Grains, vegetable, fruit, dairy and meat. So I would say pregnancy goes great with pizza. My wife might not agree with that. At least I was willing to eat my fair share of pizza during the pregnancy.

Hi biblefreeorg, I absolutely agree with you and the instructor that pizza could be a healthy food if prepared the right way. Thanks for your comment.
You have some great ideas here. We have a pizza night about once a month. I usually just cut up a lot of fresh vegetables to serve with the pizza. That seems to work well for my family.

Indeed, fresh vegetables can turn almost any food into a healthy meal. Thanks for your comment, Laraine. Best regards, Brenda
I added your title question on webanswers and am getting some pretty interesting answers. What goes great with pizza?
