Wallpaper is In Demand Once Again

By Brenda Reeves

Wallpaper was a popular wall covering years ago but fell out of favor for a while. However, new designs have brought wallpaper back to the forefront in design options. It is versatile, easy to apply and offers an incredible array of colors, designs and textures.

Here are some of the newest trends in wallpaper that take it from Grandma’s florals to a refreshingly contemporary wall covering with dramatic design impact.

Hot New Colors: Wallpapers have moved on from the pastels and boring designs popular decades ago in bold new color territory. You’ll find papers featuring hot modern colors like aubergine, mustard yellow, and chartreuse. Neutral shades like gray and brown are presented in innovative combinations, contrasts and design motifs that give them a fresh new look. Wallpaper can be used to create a focal wall that adds a designer look with greater impact than paint.

Design on a Grand Scale: One benefit of wallpaper has always been the presentation of design and pattern that can give a room a signature look, whether used on one focal wall or on multiple walls. While wallpaper designs vary from subtle and diminutive to bold, large scale patterns, greater design impact can be achieved with bold graphic patterns. The wallpaper essentially serves as a work of art unto itself and adds character and mood to a space.

Among current trends in wallpaper designs are damask and branch or floral patterns on a large scale. Damask brings elegant tradition to a room that is especially beautiful in a living room, study or dining room. Designs that feature branch and floral patterns bring an organic element to a room that often offers a sense of serenity and familiarity. Patterns with high contrast color combinations, like classic black and white or charcoal and slate blue, provide even greater drama and impact.

Wallpaper that Shimmers and Shines: Wallpaper encrusted with glass beads and crystal is a new trend that adds a little shimmer to a room. Light reflected off the glass or crystal creates an elegant, opulent look that creates a memorable impression in a glamorous dining room or guest powder room. Wallpaper with a metallic finish is another recent trend that can be used to add sparkle that shimmers with reflected light. Metallic paper used on a focal wall will stand out even more if the surrounding walls are covered in a paper with a matte finish. Flocked wallpaper, with its trademark velvety texture, is also becoming a popular once again in well dressed homes.

Environmentally Aware Wallpaper: Like Low VOC paint and wall art made from recycled metal, wallpaper manufacturers are responding to the demand for eco-conscious decorating materials and are making papers from natural sustainable materials like grass and bamboo, cork and burlap. No longer just available in natural neutrals, these papers can be had in a rainbow of modern hues and they offer a great deal of textural interest. Because they are stiff, they are easy to handle and install. They are not recommended for use in high humidity areas, however.

Make a Mural – No View Required: The technological marvel of digital photography makes it possible for anyone to enjoy a realistic mountain vista, primitive forest, rolling surf or English garden on their wall simply by hanging wallpaper. Photographic murals add a contemporary punch to a room with their strong colors and bold designs, so they are the perfect accompaniment to pared down, streamlined modern furnishings.

I love to hang wallpaper, as I think of the room as my canvas and the finished project as my creation. Keeping all seams straight and trimming around moldings can be a challenge.
Thank you for sharing, Brenda.
Best to you.
