Understanding the Importance of High Quality Carpeting
By Brenda Reeves
In this budget-conscious world, the added value provided by high quality carpeting is not always fully understood or appreciated. But, as is the case with many other household products, you definitely "get what you pay for." It's important to remember when selecting carpeting that a higher quality product will wear better and last longer. Of course, there's always the chance that a natural disaster or an unforeseen accident could occur, but generally speaking, quality carpeting won't need to be replaced as quickly. Before shopping for carpet, it's important to understand the many benefits of choosing a high quality product. There are a few factors you should definitely consider when shopping for high quality carpeting. The carpet fibers themselves are important, since they are one of the primary features. The quality of the carpet backing should also be considered, since it should provide protection against mildew and moisture. If you do your research before you buy, you'll be able to make a better informed decision. Understanding Carpet Fibers The fiber that the carpeting is made from can definitely help to determine its overall quality. However, it's also important to understand that different materials are sometimes better suited for different spaces. A carpet that would be considered to be high quality for an office building might not be what you would consider for your living room. The perfect indoor carpet would likely not be at all suitable for outside use. There are many different carpet fibers used today, including the popular nylon, olefin and wool varieties. However, there are many other fibers which can also be considered, based on your intended use and your decorating budget. If you're looking for a durable carpet fiber that is able to withstand fading, nylon would be a good choice. Although it's one of the most expensive carpet fibers, nylon can have a long lifespan. Olefin is another popular choice, which is not only comfortable but also less expensive than nylon. However, it is a bit less durable as compared to nylon. Experts generally recommend choosing olefin carpeting with a shorter pile, since this can extend the carpet's life and reduce the chance of damage. Wool is a great eco-friendly carpet choice, since it is a natural fiber. Carpet Backing Considerations The quality of the carpet backing is very important to the overall quality of the carpet. Although you probably won't see your carpet's backing material after it's been installed, it can make a big difference in your carpet's life and resiliency. The three basic carpet backing types commonly used in homes and businesses are: 1. Jute . This strong, moisture-resistant and durable carpet backing material is frequently used for industrial carpeting and varieties designed for office building installations. Moisture resistant qualities are very important to a carpet backing, since moisture can encourage the growth of mold and mildew. 2. Polypropylene. Similar to jute, polypropylene can offer an even higher degree of moisture resistance. As such, it is a good carpet backing to use where dampness and humidity can be a problem. 3. Foam. Although foam doesn't offer the level of durability provided by the other carpet backing options, it is easy and convenient to use. Since the use of foam can eliminate the need for under-padding, it can often reduce the overall cost of the carpeting project.
