Turning a Family Room Corner into a Library

By Brenda Reeves

Years ago, mansions and homes of the well-to-do always included a stately library complete with floor to ceiling bookshelves, elaborate wall paneling and sumptuous furnishings. However, modern families are more likely to appreciate a well-organized library space tucked into a shared space, and a family room is an idea location for a corner library. This is a functional and inexpensive way to add the benefits of a home library to your existing space.

Start with Shelving

Of course, a library is going to need shelves and you should think about the quantity of books that you want to store in your corner library. You may opt for floor-to-ceiling bookcases or lower bookcases that are set at a right angle to each other in the corner. Whether you build the shelves yourself or purchase pre-made bookcases, make sure that they are sturdy enough to hold all your books and take the time to attach tall bookshelves to the wall. This will keep them from tipping over, which can be especially dangerous with little ones in the house.

Seating, Lighting and Decor

How much seating is needed depends on how many people will be using the space. If it’s a place for mom to curl up with a good book after the kids have gone to bed, then a comfortable chair and ottoman may be all that is needed. But if the whole family is going to use the space simultaneously, a loveseat or loveseat and chair might be a better way to go.

Lighting is very important to keep eye strain at bay. If the library corner is near a window, this will be a great benefit during the day especially if your window treatments let the maximum amount of light into the room. You will also need additional lighting for night time reading or for dark and dreary days. A floor lamp, table lamp or wall sconce lamp are great ways to add targeted light and your choice can be made based on the amount of available space for a fixture.

When it comes to decor, you can let the library corner blend seamlessly with the rest of the family room decor, while still adding a little unique style or definition to the area. An area rug will help ground and define the space. Furniture in the area can be a contrast in color or pattern to furniture elsewhere in the room; this makes the area different from the rest of the family room, yet still coordinated.

Organizing your Book Collection

How you choose to organize your books is a personal choice. Some people like to alphabetize by author or title; others like to arrange books by subject or genre. Books can also be arranged by color or size. If children will be using the library corner, reserve the lower shelves for their favorites. Your bookshelves can also add an element of style to the family room: Arrange some books horizontally and others vertically to add visual interest. You can sprinkle in collectibles, knick-knacks, and family photos to create an arrangement that is both stylish and fascinating.
