Tips on How to Make Your Own Wine Rack
By Jessica Stockton
A wine rack is great way to display your wine collection. It can also serve as a great wall decoration in your home. A great looking wall wine rack can be a good conversation piece during dinner parties. It can also be a practical way to store your wines without having to bother going up and down the stairs form your basement. The cost of a wall wine rack can be expensive depending on the size, shape and design of a wall wine rack. However, there are a lot of easy, do-it-yourself projects that you can do to create your own wall wine rack Building your own wine rack gives you that satisfaction of accomplishing something. At the same time, you can always personalize the style and design of your wine rack. There are several guidelines you can follow in making your own wine rack. The first factor you should consider when planning to build your own wine rack is to choose the size of the wine rack that you want to build. The size of your wall wine rack will be determined by the size of the wall space where you want to place your wine rack. Wine racks may vary in size. If the wall is too large, you can build a wine rack that can fit the entire space and build your own collection of wines. If you plan to place your wine rack in your dining room then consider something that is not too large so as not to counter the size of your dining table. Wine racks can also be placed on top of kitchen counters or islands. If you prefer this type of wine rack, then a smaller size wine rack is sufficient. Another important thing to consider when building your own wine rack is the position of the wine bottles within the rack. Wines should be stored horizontally to allow the debris of the wine to settle near the neck of the bottle. This is important so that when you open a bottle of wine you can easily get rid of the sediments. It is also easier to decanter a bottle of wine if this is done during storage. Storing wine bottles horizontally allows the wine to touch the cork keeping it wet. Dry corks can be a little difficult to extract from a wine bottle. It will crumble collapse and may fall in your wine. Build a wine rack deep enough to sturdily support the wine bottles. Make sure that bottles are not protruding out too much or it may cause some accidents in the future. The deeper the bottles are in the wine rack the sturdier and more durable the wine rack will be. The number of slots in your wine rack will depend largely on the size of your wine rack. A smaller wine rack will accommodate a smaller number of bottles while a larger one will allow you to store more bottles of wine. There are two ideal types of slots you can choose from – flat-box and diamond slot. Both will allow you to store as many bottles as the size allows. This type of slots also maximizes the space of the wine rack you are building. The type of wood you use is also an important factor when building your own wine rack. Use wood materials that are study like oak. This type of wood can withstand the weight of the bottles at the same time they are more durable. Do not use wood that are prone to mildew or rotting. When hanging your wine rack, make sure that you screw holes first before installing the screws. This is to avoid cracking the wood. Once you have installed your wine rack, make sure to test it for sturdiness. Place water-filled bottles about the same size of a standard wine bottle and place them in your wine rack. If the wine rack can hold all of these bottles then it can hold your wine bottles as well. In building your own wine rack, make sure that you always personalize it. Remember that a wine rack, particularly a wall wine rack, can also serve as a wall home décor that anyone can see.
