Three Steps to a Clean, Organized Garage!
By Brenda Reeves
A well-organized garage can house items like bicycles, garden implements and other tools, in addition to your vehicles, but the key is to organize the items that belong in the garage and get rid of the rest. A disorganized, cluttered garage can not only be frustrating to use, but it can be downright dangerous if items should fall or cause a tripping hazard. Plus, dangerous chemicals typically stored in garages can cause corrosion or even fire. Here are three tips to get your garage under control once and for all. 1. Prioritize and Purge: Before you can get your garage organized, you need to separate items to keep from items that need to go. Go through everything in the time working from the top down, one wall at a time and separate everything into three piles: Items that stay, items to store elsewhere, and items that must go. Of the items that go, divide those that can be donated or sold from those that are simply trash. Bag up the trash items and neatly box up or organize the other in one corner of the garage; contact your local city hall to find out how to properly dispose of chemicals and paints. Work in this fashion throughout the entire garage then take the trash to the curb and move the items to be stored elsewhere back to the designated locations. Load the donate items into your car and plan the date for your garage right away so that particular pile doesn’t work it’s way back into your garage contents. Organize the garage sale items into an out of the way location of the garage until the sale date, but give yourself a 2 week limit: If you don’t sell the items by then, donate them and move on! Now you can organize what is left. 2. Organize What’s Left: There are hundreds of organizational tools available for garage storage and to make the most of your space, take some time to evaluate what you need to store and the best way to store it. Also research different types of storage at home improvement centers and from online sources; then select and install your storage solutions. Ceiling hooks are a great way store bikes without the danger of them falling into the car. Pegboard is an inexpensive and versatile option for hand tool storage and loose items like cans of tennis balls or spray paint, pet grooming supplies and boxes of plant fertilizer. Wall storage caddies for rakes, brooms, shovels and other necessities save floor space and keep these items from tipping over. Wall shelves and cabinets are also very useful for a myriad of items; just be sure to choose options that are sturdy enough to safely hold what you need to store. 3. Maintenance: Now that your garage is clean, tidy and spacious once again, you need a plan to easily keep it that way. Make sure that bike caddies and hooks are low enough for kids to easily utilize them. Use a black marker to outline and label tools hung on pegboard so that it’s easy to see at a glance where everything goes. Keep trash picked up and add recycling bins for glass, plastic and paper so that those items don’t take over the garage. Spend a an hour every couple of weeks, or as necessary, to maintain the space so that it doesn’t become a monster once again that take days or weeks to reorganize. Photo credit to jloupe . |

It's amazing just how much space can be created by good use of the walls by fitting shelving to get stuff off the floor.

Hi odls, Thank you for your comment. You are absolutely right. Shelves are great tools to help you keep any room organized and decluttered. Best regards, Brenda
Good advice on a structured approach to cleaning a garage. Of especial note, "call city hall to find out how to properly dispose of paint and chemicals."
