The Art of Designing the Perfect Living Room

By Jessica Stockton

Rembrandt once said, “Without atmosphere a painting is nothing.” Nowhere does this principle hold more true than for a living room’s interior design, because lack of ambiance can practically ruin a home’s natural beauty. On the other hand, making a few simple modifications can drastically improve its aesthetic value and allow you to create an architectural masterpiece. Just like the painters of old, your walls and floor are your canvass; what you decide to do with them is a work of art.

Fortunately, designing a model living room is not as hard as it seems. By reading books or browsing authoritative web sites, one can easily find the basic tenets of interior decorating. From the most traditional rugs and carpets to the most contemporary metal wall art, every piece of decor must be used according to some fundamental rules of design. It is only after you have mastered these rules that you can feel confident enough to break them from time to time if necessary.

Perhaps the most essential concept to remember is that every successful project begins with a good plan. Take the time to ponder the purpose for which you will be using the room, the mood and tone you wish to create, and how much money you can afford to spend. In general, formal living rooms follow a strict symmetry and require more expensive materials, modern living rooms are not very pattern-specific, and exotic living rooms use brilliant colors and various textures to create an unusual look.

Make the most of what is already available. By simply repositioning your furniture and accessories, placing candles, pottery, glasses, and flower vases in strategic locations, you can produce a sense of balance of harmony that creates a relaxing atmosphere in the living room. Grouping elements with great visual impact, such as contemporary metal wall art and exquisite wooden carvings, forms a focal point that keeps an audience interested for minutes on end.

It is also important to pay attention to detail. Take a good look at your existing living room and try to see what can be done to improve it. You might want to redecorate the smaller areas such as the side window or the top of a cabinet. You might need to place some unique home decor in frequently neglected corners to emphasize unremarkable but highly valuable family heirlooms. Whatever you decide to change, try to imagine how it will affect the rest of the room and practice moderation when in doubt.

Finally, you should try to find your own style. Know yourself, and let your interior decorating serve as an outlet for those pent-up emotions and creative juices. There are few things in life that are more satisfying than letting your imagination run free, inspiring you to try new combinations that no one has tried before. Let the joy of creating beautiful images be your greatest motivation, because as Leonardo da Vinci has discovered long ago, “Where the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art.”
