Stylish Improvements a Galley Style Kitchen
By Jessica Stockton
It’s not unusual to find gallery style kitchens in older homes and apartments. These kitchens are best recognized by their rectangular design, with both sides of the room lined with cabinets. While galley style kitchens can be efficiently designed for cooking, it is not uncommon for these kitchens to be quite cramped. A few decorative and organizational improvements can make your gallery-style kitchen more spacious and stylish. Add Storage Space Adding storage space is a boon to any kitchen but especially so in the tight quarters of a gallery style kitchen. Take advantage of the wall space at the end of the kitchen and install a wall or ceiling mounted pot rack. They are rather inexpensive, will up the style quotient of your kitchen and free up cabinet space. Another option is to install peg board at the end of the kitchen to hang smaller pots, pans and utensils. Paint it in a dramatic shade to add a punch of decorative style. Downsize Appliances Full-size appliance take up too much room in a gallery style kitchen and make it feel even more cramped. Instead, shop for apartment or condo size appliances that are smaller in scale and make it easier to function in the kitchen. You’ll find everything from stoves to refrigerators and under-counter microwaves in scaled down versions to fit your space. Splurge on Decor In some cases, the smaller size of these galley style kitchens is actually a considerable benefit. For example, if you wanted to add a marble or granite counter-top, the cost is not prohibitive because you don’t have a lot of counter space to cover. Quality materials will not only outlast standard Formica, it will be a pleasure to work in such beautiful surroundings. Upgrade the Lighting If your galley style kitchen has ugly fluorescent lighting replace it with a stylish upgrade. Modern glass pendants let you stagger lighting throughout the space with panache. Add under cabinet lighting to highlight those gorgeous counter-tops and improve work lighting. Dimmers are essential if you want to control intensity with ease. Add Distinction with Color You can improve the appearance of space in your kitchen, which helps improve its aesthetics, by painting your kitchen in cool light colors – such as pale blue or soft green. Or you can add a deep dramatic color on a wall to add depth. Create color splashes throughout by repeating kitchen lively colors in wall art, counter-top appliances and kitchen accessories. Expanding the Space If you wish to expand the space of your kitchen, it may be possible to tear out a wall so that the kitchen is open to a dining or living space. Consult with a reputable contractor is you are unsure whether the wall you want to move is load-bearing. Another option is to replace a back door with a French door for more natural light.
