Small Bathroom + Tile = Big Style
By Jessica Stockton
If you have a small bathroom in your house, there is no reason that it cannot have a big impact design. When you are planning your bathroom design take a moment to consider using tile to add interest to the room. Adding tile to your bathroom can be intricate and time consuming, or it can be very simple and still pack a wallop of an impact in your space. Borders – Adding contrast to a room fills it with movement and energy. So if you add a contrasting colored, tile border to bathroom, you can bring movement into the space without making the room too busy. Adding a strong horizontal line to a room will make it seem large, so keep this in mind as you are decorating. Keep It Simple – When you are adding tile to a small space, remember that too much pattern, especially when tiny and detailed, while it does energize the space, also exhausts the eye. When a small room is overwhelmed by pattern, is actually becomes visually smaller, so you will want to stay away from small, busy patterns in your bathroom. Consider using neutral background colors and adding splashes of color around the room to make it feel vibrant. For example by installing a floor of white tile with randomly placed bold, colored tile, you can add some color and movement to the room without overwhelming it. Shine – By adding glossy surfaces to your small bathroom, you make it feel larger than it actually is. So use the shine factor that tile offers to increase the visual space in your room. You can use the standard glazed tiles, or some of the new glass tiles and metallic tiles can really ramp up the interest quotient in a room. Keep It Light – By keeping your color palette on the light side, you can keep the light bouncing around the room, which again visually enlarges the space. Of course you want to bring in as much natural light as possible, and then you can keep it dancing around the room with all of the shiny surfaces that are built into the room’s design. Tiny Tile – In any small room, you have the choice of using small or large scale. If you are designing with smaller tiles, you may opt to create a mosaic border with a lot of detail, and it will work fine as long as you keep other surfaces simple. On the other hand, you may want to create a high contrast focal wall with tiny, mosaic tiles, which would add color and drama to your space. Giant Tile - Remember when going with a larger scale that less is more. If designing with larger tiles, create a single focal point, and keep other designs in low contrast. By keeping the grout line a similar color to the tile, you can create a vast expanse of the same color, which will make the room seem larger visually. The Whole – As you are designing your tile areas, make sure that they tie into your overall room design. Whatever colors you choose to use in your tile design make sure that they somehow relate back to other elements in the room. Also take a look at your fixtures, and make sure that they blend well with the room’s overall design to keep the space looking cohesive. |
