Six Surprising Wine Producing Regions
By Jessica Stockton
There are several wine-producing countries in the world, some more popular than others. Countries like France and Italy are among the best known and when mentioned you automatically think of specific wines like Bordeaux, Champagne and Chianti. However, there are several regions that also produce wine that may not be as well known, but are fast gaining popularity. These wine producing regions also produce good quality wines that more and more people are now discovering and enjoying. Andalucia Andalucia is located in the southwest region of Spain. It probably has the largest land area dedicated to vineyards. Although not really a wine producing region, Andalucia produces a world-class amber sherry. Sherry is a fortified wine made from white grapes. More popularly known as a product of Jerez, Spain, sherry is fortified with brandy once the fermentation process is done. One can visit a vineyard in this region and receive an educational tour about the wine-making process used in the region. California In recent years, California’s wine-making regions have gained popularity among wine lovers, with California wines finding a home in wall mounted wine racks everywhere. California’s Napa Valley is the largest wine-producing region in the United States. California wines have become not only popular, they have earned the respect of wine connoisseurs, with wines that compete and hold their own against world-class vintages from countries with a long history of producing high-quality wines. Almost all Californian vineyards are family owned and operated, making the wine-making process more intimate and personalized. Loire Valley Loire Valley is another wine-producing region that may be underappreciated. This region is known as the Garden of France and the Cradle of the French Language. This region offers a varied selection of wine. The locale also has a great climate suitable for wine making. Loire Valley produces more white wines than red with a selection that varies from a crisp and refreshing white wine to a drier one. Niagara Although best known for the Niagara Falls, Niagara is also one of the top wine-producing regions in the world. Its modest temperature and rich soil is perfect for grape growing and wine producing. Ice Wine is one of Niagara’s greatest contributions to the world of wine. It is a dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The process of making Ice Wine is very labor intensive and there are risks related to losing the crop if left on the vine too long. Because of this, Ice Wine can be a little more costly than other wines. Oregon Oregon is another wine-producing region in the United States, boasting the third largest number of wineries of any state in the country. As per recent record, there are about 40 different types of wines being produced in this state. Porto Porto wine, named after the location where it is produced, is more commonly known as Port. It is a Portuguese fortified wine. It is typically a sweet red wine that can also come in dry, semi-dry and white varieties. All of these six uncommon wine producing regions create wonderful wines that deserve to be stored in any metal wall art and wall mounted wine rack.
