Set a New Vibe with Unconventional Bedside Tables
By Brenda Reeves
Many people feel that bedside tables should be feature classic lines, gleaming wood finishes and traditional knobs – and of course they should match each other. Well if you want to break free of the ordinary and expected, consider something a little more unusual in bedside tables. Bedside tables that break the rules create an interesting look in a bedroom and create a mood or vibe that is anything but dull and predictable. Consider these ideas. An Unusual Hue Most bedside tables feature a natural wood finish or they may be black or white. You can do something different simply by picking an unexpected color. Of course, you don’t want to use something gaudy or ugly, but look to other hues in the room and take your cue from there. A beautiful shade of eggplant, burgundy, blue or green can be featured in your bedside tables, bringing out the same luscious shade that appears in the bedding, window treatments or wall decor. You can also create a faux finish on wood that mimics marble, stone or some other finish. Bedside tables with metallic or mirrored surfaces are also very chic and add sparkle and dazzle to the room. An Unusual Shape Typical bedside table are rectangular or square, or you may find something a little more daring in an oval or round shape. While such bedside tables may be beautiful, if you are decorating a contemporary room, shape is an all-important feature. Choosing something with a triangular shape, for example, can give the room a very avant-garde look. If the triangle subtly appears in another fabric or pattern, so much the better! A combination of shapes is also a cool idea; for instance you might choose a cube table stand with a round glass table top. Purposely Mismatched Bedside tables do not have to match: In fact purposely mismatching them gives the room an eclectic or innovative feel, it just depends on the style of the room. For example, in a traditional room, you can choose one square bedside table with drawers and use a tiered candlestick table on the other side of the bed. Similar wood finishes will make this work and this technique can also be a great space saving solution. In a modern room, create a cutting edge look with a metallic trunk on one side of the bed and a mirrored nightstand on the other. Mixing and matching is all about personal choice and provides a great vehicle for expressing your unique design perspective. Customized Options Another great way to get a customized look is by starting with standard tables, but then changing the hardware or finish. For instance, you can swap out ordinary pulls and knobs for vintage varieties that add more personality. Or choose a themed pulls, like palm trees and iguanas mixed and matched, to add a finishing touch to a tropical bedroom. Mixing materials can also create a new look: Add a granite or marble top to wood beside tables, for example. Faux antique finishes like crackling, as well as other techniques like decoupage, mirrored and metallic treatments can be considered as well; a trip to your local paint store or home improvement center can provide the inspiration and know-how.
