Seasonal Decor for your Front Door and Entry
By Brenda Reeves
A front door that is decked out for the seasons is much more appealing than a plain Jane house that never changes or never features any type of decor. The door itself and the area immediately around it present a great opportunity to stay in step with the season. Not only does this make your home more attractive, it demonstrates your attention to detail and your sense of pride in the appearance of your home. Here are some ideas for staying in step with every season that don’t take a lot of time, effort or money. An All-Season’s Door Wreath One of the easiest ways to add seasonal flair is with a wreath. Of course you could make or buy one for each season, and that is fine if you have a place to store the three wreaths that are currently out of season, but a better and less expensive option is to buy a grapevine wreath and change out the decor as the seasons change. Start with a grapevine wreath that is appropriately sized for your door. Wrap the wreath in plain faux ivy or other greenery, winding it around the entire wreath and tucking or gluing the end in the back. Twist some wire at the top for hanging or purchase a door wreath hanger that simply slides over the top of your door. Now browse a craft or discount store for seasonal picks that can simply be inserted between the grapevine branches. Tulips, daffodils and pansies are perfect for spring; then move on to roses and summer flowers, then mums, sunflowers and fall flowers and finally holly, berries and poinsettias for the winter holidays. You can also find small decorative items like snowmen, scarecrows, shamrocks, bunnies and the like that can also be inserted in the grape vining. Faux branches with blooms and greenery or those that are bare or sparkling for winter are also nice. You can make several bows and change them out with the seasons as well. Now all you have to store are the picks and bows instead of three wreaths, and you can rotate your supplies as one year slips into another. Potted Plants, Window Boxes and Baskets Potted plants are a wonderful means for welcoming visitors to your door. It’s easy to change out window boxes, baskets or pots with seasonal flowers and in many climates you can feature flowers from March through early fall. Just pull the old flowers out of the containers when through, mix in some fresh compost and fertilizer and replant with this seasons flowers. When winter comes, remove fall flowers and simply push evergreen boughs, holly and berry branches into the soil and add a few pinecones for a festive look. Flags, Statuary, Wall Decor and More! Details mean a lot and add the finishing touch to your entry area. Flags are a great way to welcome seasonal changes, whether you display a flagpole from a post or wall or use a garden flag holder that pushes into the ground. Garden statuary, obelisks and vintage style wrought iron decor are also great for defining your style and adding personality to your entry area. Plaques, signs and wall decor can also be used to define a theme – such as the beach house or lodge – or display your family name, address or a cherished motto. If there is enough room on your porch area, a small stool, bench or rocking chair adds a welcoming touch that is perfect for every season.
