Scrapbooking for the Artistically Challenged
By Brenda Reeves
Even if you think you’re not creative or you aren’t the most artistic of people, scrapbooking is a craft that most people can enjoy. It doesn’t require skill as much as it requires a desire to assemble memories so that they can be relived over and over again. Do it Your Way When contemplating how to go about creating a scrapbook for yourself, your family or a friend, first realize that your best abilities and ideas will be enough. You may have friends who are very artistic and capable of creating elaborately designed scrapbook pages, but that doesn’t mean that their way is the only way to create a scrapbook. The purpose of a scrapbook is to preserve memories and photos, so it is not necessary to add a lot of decorative embellishments unless you want to. If you are happy with the finished result, that is all that matters. And if you are creating a scrapbook for a friend, they will be thrilled that you are thoughtful enough to assemble and arrange a book of their favorite memories. Resources to Inspire You Craft stores and scrapbooking specialty stores carry page kits with coordinated pages and page accessories that make it easy to create a well designed page. These kits also contain design suggestions and include stickers, paper photo frames and a variety of design elements that will help you personalize your scrapbook pages. Spend some time browsing through scrapbooking supplies and you’ll find entire kits that include the actual scrapbook, the pages, as well as a variety of papers and supplies. If you are new to scrapbooking, this can make the whole process easier because you won’t need to decide what supplies you need and the kit gives you many ideas on how to design pages and put the book together. You can also turn to any number of scrapbooking magazines and how-to books as a guide for creating pages and arranging books. Most of these include detailed instructions and templates that make it easy for anyone to create attractive scrapbook pages. You can also search online for websites that include scrapbooking ideas and downloadable design elements that you can use in your scrapbook. Start Small and Focus on the Personal A good way to dip your toe into the ocean of scrapbooking ideas and options is to start small. Design an entire scrapbook built on a single theme that is reflected in each page, this way you don’t need to come up with a theme for each individual page. You could design a small book on a child’s preschool years or an important activity, such as sport or drama club, in the child’s life. You could also make a book on a vacation or a series of similar vacations; for example, if your family takes a beach vacation or a ski vacation each year, you can do a few pages each year with photos and mementos from that year’s trip. If the artsy-craftsy part of scrapbooking is not your forte, you can take a personal approach instead of stressing over creating elaborate artistic pages. Write a short paragraph or captions for each page describing the photos and include memories associated with them. This approach is especially appreciated by parents, grandparents and older relatives who would enjoy browsing through a book of family photographs with associated stories and memories that they can revisit whenever they want. Above all, keep in mind that creating a scrapbook is principally about preserving memories in a way that is meaningful to you and the recipient; it’s not about whether or not you have outstanding artistic abilities.
