Ribbons and Buttons Tie a Bow on Nursery Design

By Brenda Reeves

Everything connected with the arrival of a new baby is a happy time, including decorating the nursery. While you can find a myriad of ready made themes just waiting for your nursery, you may want to think about decorating your baby’s nursery in a style that speaks to you personally. You will not only create a unique room, but you will also be able to redecorate at an affordable price. By using ribbons and buttons to create an adorable looking room for your baby, you can create your own color combinations and designs.

Cute Touches for Nursery Curtains
One of the first projects that you can do for the nursery is making tab top curtains. By using ribbon to make the tabs, these curtains are simple enough for anyone to make. You can either buy pre made curtain panels, or you can simply hem the top and bottom of a length of fabric in whatever color suits you. Then cut six to eight lengths of six-inch ribbon in a coordinating or complementary color of ribbon. Fold them in half and sew them at regular intervals to the top edge of the curtain panel. After the tabs are securely attached to the panel, you can sew a button to the front of each tab. Again the button can blend or contrast with the ribbon color. Slide a curtain rod through the ribbon tabs, and it is ready to hang.

Embellishing a Wall Hanging
To decorate the walls of your nursery, you can hang a colorful quilt, but rather than simply hang a quilt on the wall, you can add ribbon tabs for hanging as well. Just as with the curtains, cut about six lengths of six-inch ribbon, fold over and stitch to the top edge of the quilt. If your quilt is a standard block design, you can continue embellishing your quilt with buttons and bows. Tie a bow for each square and sew a button to its center. Then, using a large craft needle, run a thread through the back of the quilt through the center of a square and back to tie off. You can arrange the colors of your buttons and bows in a pattern, or they can be randomly arranged.

Trimming a Lamp Shade
Now it is time to add some ribbon to dress up your nursery lampshade. Cut two lengths of ribbon, one to go around the top of the shade and one to go around the bottom. Then attach colorful buttons to the ribbon at regular intervals by hand sewing. You can embellish with animal buttons or even spell baby’s name with alphabetic buttons. After all of the buttons are properly secured to the ribbon, you can attach the ribbon to the top and bottom edges of the lampshade with a glue gun.

Finishing with a Wall Border
As you are painting the walls of baby’s nursery, consider adding some buttons and bows there as well. You can stencil a border around the room in your button and bow motif. You can design your own stencil, or you can buy one that is already made. The border can be stenciled at any level in the room depending on the look that you want to achieve in the room. If you do not feel like stenciling, you can always hang a wallpaper border around the room to add a little fun to the nursery walls.
