Remodeling your Bathroom on a Budget

By Jessica Stockton

There is something very satisfying about completing any home improvement project. Not only do you get to enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done, but you also have a brand new space in your home, which may very well increase your home’s market value. Updating your bathroom is a project that not only positively affects your daily life, but it also makes your home more saleable. One of the great things about renovating your bathroom is that since it is usually a fairly small room without a lot of furniture, you can afford to update this space using a modest budget.

Replacing Tile
One way to really have an impact on any bathroom is to replace the tile. While this is a laborious process, replacing simple tile work requires more diligence and patience than artisan level skill. Of course there are tiling jobs that you will want to leave to the professionals, but redoing the tile in a shower surround or on a countertop is a job that even a novice do-it-yourselfer can successfully complete. You can get instruction from your local home improvement stores, or there is a plethora of information available on the Internet. Tiles come in all sorts of materials, finishes and colors, and they can be used to cover just about any surface in your bathroom.

Signature Vanity
If you have a little practice doing your own home improvement projects, then you may want to take a crack at updating the vanity in your bathroom with a custom piece. To do this, simply look for an attractive piece of furniture and re-purpose it. Make sure that the piece of furniture, like an old dresser, a lowboy or even an old desk, is the proper scale for the room, or you will need to alter it to fit. Do not be afraid to add legs or cut legs off or even cut a few inches off of the back of the piece to get it to the correct size for your space. Then either you, or a plumber, add your plumbing, a bowl and a faucet to match the new style of your room. If finding and fitting your own piece of furniture to your new bathroom is more of a task than you can manage, then check with retailers who specialize in home décor to find a special vanity for your new space.

Plumbing Pros,
When it comes to plumbing, a little leak can destroy and entire house. So be honest with yourself when accessing your plumbing skills, because a little money spent on a plumber at the beginning of your project may save your house from undergoing a fiasco by the end of your project. Do not bite off more than you can chew, and your project will be fun to do and spectacular to behold. And remember, just because you do not have the skill set that is needed to redo all of your plumbing, you may be able to do some of the work yourself. Look at the tasks that you need to complete for your project and only contract out the pieces of the work where you need help. There is no reason why you cannot do the rest of the project yourself. You can also look at hiring a professional as a private lesson if you assist him with your project. By being involved in upgrading your faucets, bathtubs, toilets, light fixtures and electrical plates, you may pick up some skills that you can incorporate into your next project.

Tighten the Tight Budget
If you know that you really need to have a plumber or electrician help you with the bathroom, but you simply cannot afford it right now, do not worry. There are still many ways that you can update the space without having to do any major renovations. First of all a new layer of paint applied to the walls and cabinets immediately brightens the room. A fresh shower curtain with your new color scheme that coordinates with your new towels will instantly dress the room. Add a new mirror and some art on the wall for drama. Then add a pop of color with a new toothbrush holder and soap dish, and there you have it, a fresh new space.
