Remaking Old Furniture with Fabric & Paint

By Jessica Stockton

People are decorating on a limited budget and of course they are trying to stretch their decorating dollar as far as it will go. The good news is that it seems that just about every household has old furniture tucked away somewhere. It may be in the spare room, the attic, the basement or the garage, and when it is time to decorate on a shoestring, that old furniture is really going to come in handy. If you do not have any old furniture or need a piece that you do not have, take heart, because there are plenty of garage sales and thrift stores where you pick up just what you need for next to nothing.

No Rules
The cool thing about reinventing a piece of furniture is that there are absolutely no rules to follow. You can mount a chair on the wall and use it for a shelf, for example, so try to suspend your normal reality as you are pondering what to do in your space with your furniture creations. You can also take that one old chair and use it as seating for your bathroom vanity. You can place it in the front hallway as a place to put on your boots. You may even place it beside your bed as a bedside table. By simply building a wood shelf and attaching it to the rungs under the chair, you can add storage to your bedside ‘table’. Do not be afraid to add a coat of glossy, colorful paint to your piece of furniture to make it more appropriate for its new home, or even to just make it a little more fun.

Refinish
Refinishing a piece of wooden furniture, such as an old chair, can be a very satisfying project. To take your old chair and restore its original luster, you will need to sand it to get a smooth surface. If it has a padded seat, remove it. Then add a thin layer of primer to the chair, and when that is dry, you can add your first layer of paint. Make sure to use high gloss enamel, and if you apply it with a sponge brush you will avoid creating brush marks on the surface. If your furniture has a lot of detail, then you may opt to use spray enamel to cover the furniture without losing any of the intricate detail of the piece. After you have added a second coat of paint to your furniture, and it is completely dry you can replace your padded seat to finish it.

Redefine
If you are reinventing your furniture instead of just refinishing it, then you can really have some fun. You may want to add a faux paint treatment to make the piece look distressed or antique. You may want to give the piece of furniture a whole new use. For example, you can take an old dresser that is long and low, remove the legs and add a fresh, glossy coat of paint to go with your decor. Top it with two square cushions and you have just created a new coffee table for your living room that can double as extra seating, storage and an ottoman. When you are looking at furniture with the intention of reinventing it remember that you always have the option of totally transforming it - and then have some fun!
