Reface or Replace? That is the Kitchen Cabinet Question.

By Brenda Reeves

When you are making over your kitchen, one of the most expensive portions of a remodel is the cabinets. So it only makes sense to see if your can get away with refacing your cabinets so that you do not have to replace them all. While refacing cabinets is still not super cheap, it is a good deal more affordable than installing new cabinets. To make an informed decision, you need to consider several factors.

Look at What you Have
Begin by taking a good, hard look at your existing cabinets. If they are in good shape, then you may have the option of refacing them. However, if the shelves are sagging, or if the internal portion of any of the cabinets is in disrepair with warped or cracked wood or otherwise broken parts, then you will not want to spend any resources refacing them. Another thing that might keep you from refacing your cabinets is if your want to change the function or configuration of the cabinets in your kitchen. If you are moving walls and redoing the plumbing and completely changing where your cabinets are going to be, then it makes sense to install new cabinets. However, if you are not completely rearranging your kitchen, and if your cabinets are still in good repair, and you simply want a different color or style of cabinet, then you probably should consider refacing your kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them.

Refacing Options
Once you decide to reface your cabinets, your decisions are far from over. You can hire a refacing company to come in and completely reface your cabinets. There are many different styles and colors from which to choose for your new look; very often, refacing involves replacing cabinet doors, so you will have to decide on new styles, finishes and colors. These companies install a thin veneer on your existing cabinet facing, and then either resurface or replace your cabinet doors. When they are done, your cabinets look brand new, and it is hard to tell that you did not have completely new cabinets installed.

While your cabinets will look fantastic, and while refacing is more affordable than installing new cabinets, the process is still not cheap. So if professional cabinet refacing is still outside of your budget, then you may simply choose to repaint your cabinets on your own. While you can paint your cabinets and even replace all of your hardware for next to nothing, it will require some time and effort on your part.

Installing New
If instead, you decide to put in completely new cabinets, then you can use a kitchen designer to help you design your kitchen layout. If you are using a contractor, they can also help you develop your floor plan. While retaining a kitchen designer may be a little too pricey for you, frequently your local home store has in store designers that will work with you to configure your cabinets and the service is free if you are purchasing new cabinets from one of their featured manufacturers. You can opt to have the cabinets installed or save money by installing them yourself.

Thank you for sharing these fine tips on updating your kitchen cabinets, Brenda. The kitchen is the biggest resale value of your home and one shouldn't cut corners in the upgrade.
Best to you.

Hi Frederick,

You are absolutely right that “Your kitchen will sell your home” as the kitchen is the focal point of selling a home.

Thank you for your comment.

Kindest regards,
Brenda Reeves

We painted our kitchen cupboards a beautiful, bright gold and our walls white, we then put in a hardwood floor. It looks really great and I love the change. This is a very informative lens.
