Organize your Own Closet by Building a Custom Organizer
By Brenda Reeves
Having an organized closet really makes your life more simple. It saves time and frustration when you know right where to find things. While there are many different styles of organizers that you can choose for your closet, there are also many different price points for them. On one hand you can have a professional organizer come in and design a custom closet for your. While this option is one of the more expensive ways to organize your closet, it certainly is effective. Another choice is to design and build your own closet inserts. A middle of the road way to go about organizing your closets is to buy prefabricated modules that are designed for closet organization, which you can configure in many different ways to suit your storage needs. Building an Organizer Any time that you build something from scratch it is a good idea to work from plans. Whether you purchase plans or design your own, using a set of plans gives you a good idea as to what materials you will need to have on hand for your project. By building your own custom insert, your closet will have the look of a high end, custom closet, and it will be specifically designed to meet your storage needs. Wire Shelving Modules If woodworking is not your strong suit, then you may want to consider using wire shelving that can be configured in just about any way to suit any closet. By mixing and matching sections of shelving, hanging rods and shelves, you can build an individualized storage system in your closet without doing any construction at all. The most that you will have to do is nail your rod hangers to the walls, which is no harder than hanging a picture. Since this is your custom storage space, you can design it any way that you wish. For instance, if you don’t need to hang long items then you can design a closet with double-decker hanging rods. If you have tons of sweaters, you may want extra shelving in your closet instead. Whatever meets your storage needs can be easily configured with wire shelving. Canvas Organizers One of the easiest ways to add some extra function to your closet organization is to use canvas organizers to increase your usable storage space. These storage units hang from the clothing rod, and they come in many different sizes. You can buy them to store shoes or large enough to store folded sweaters. While these hanging storage units are designed for shoes and clothing, you can also use them for other purposes. For example, you can use a shoe organizer to your utility closet and store cleaning supplies in it. In a craft closet, this organizer could hold art supplies or magazines, and in the foyer it could hold mittens, scarves and hats. Plastic Storage Units If you need to organize your closets, but you just do not have a lot of time or money to invest in getting the job done, you can use plastic organizer that you can find at any hardware store. You can find units with drawers or shelves, and you can even find simple modular storage like milk crates, which are affordable, lightweight and easy to configure.

Brenda, I've been looking for ideas. Our Winter storage is fine but for some reason we seem to run out of space in the summertime. I guess it is because the weather runs from cold, cold in the evening to hot in the daytime so I don't want to put our sweaters and jackets away. Your lens has given me something to think about. Thank you.

Hi larainerose, Yes indeed with such variations in temperature you can’t afford to put them away. I am glad that you found ideas in my intel to put into practice. Good luck.
