New Hardware + Old Door = New Look

By Brenda Reeves

If you want to add a new look to any door, think about updating its hardware. With many different materials and styles from which to choose, you can create a variety of different looks for your door. Whether you choose silver, chrome, copper or brass, the possibilities are limitless. You can find a wide selection of hardware at just about any home improvement store, and for some of the more unique offerings, you may want to look at some online options too.

Various Styles
Largely inexpensive, hardware for a door comes in many different styles, and it is typically made in steel, bronze or brass. You can find mortise entry sets, keyed sets or many other individual pieces. By updating your old hardware with new steel, bronze or brass, you can give your door a whole new look. The other great thing about these materials is that they are very easy to maintain.

If you have a vintage style to your home, and you want to outfit your door with hardware to match, you will certainly be able to find hardware with some personality. Using nostalgic hardware for your door is a wonderful way to add a little personality to the door and keep the hardware in line with your decor. Typically you will have to turn to the internet and search online retailers to find examples of the more nostalgic hardware, which is styled to look like old fashioned hardware, but the internal workings are very modern and secure.

Not Just Locks
Door locks and handles are certainly nice looking, and they really update the look of a front door. However, if you want to add even more style to the doorway there are other pieces of hardware that you can install on your front door like a doorknocker, which creates a visually stunning focal point for the door. You can find a door knocker to complement the style of virtually any front door from sleek and sophisticated to ostentatious. You can often find beautiful vintage doorknockers at salvage yards or out of the way antique shops.

Easy Installation
To install your new hardware all you need is a little time and a few tools. If you are swapping out your old hardware for new hardware, make sure that the new hardware is configured the same as the old hardware. For example, if your door has a handle and a separate deadbolt, then it is best to install the same configuration in your updated hardware. By not having to fill and drill new holes in your door, you will make your job much easier.

Start by taking all of the old hardware off of the door one piece at a time, and then clean the door thoroughly. Unless you are planning to paint the door, it is best to remove and reinstall one component at a time, because if you need to step away from the project, you have a logical point to do so. For example, if you are replacing a deadbolt and a doorknob, you may want to first replace the deadbolt, and then remove the doorknob. That way if you are interrupted in the middle, your door is still in working order.

After replacing your new hardware, your home will look dramatically different. Installing new hardware on your front door is a really effective way to update the look of your home's exterior. Find new hardware that you like and that fits the aesthetic of your home, and you will discover a quick and easy way add a little extra curb appeal to your entryway.
