Natural Living Room Decor: Decorating with Plants
By Jessica Stockton
Live plants will bring an element of natural beauty to your living room that cannot be captured with synthetic materials. Not only do plants bring texture and color to your space, they freshen your air, exchanging carbon dioxide with oxygen. Maintaining your plants includes watering, removing dead leaves and spent blooms, and not letting cut flowers rot in stagnant water. Refer to the tag that came with your plant for specific watering and light requirements. There are several design methods that can be incorporated when decorating a living room with plants and note that plants complement any style of décor. Here are several ideas for decorating your living room with life loving plants. Use Plant Pots to your Advantage The color of the pots you choose to hold your plants can be used to bring punches of color throughout your living room. Choose pots that coordinate with your color palette and decorative theme or style. Combine unique pots to create an eye-catching display on a coffee table or line them up with modern attitude on a window sill. Decorating with Cut Flowers Of course, green plants will work with any color scheme, but when selecting flowerx, choose colors and styles that harmonize with your décor; with so many species and colors of flowers, it won’t be hard to find blooms that look right at home. For example, heavy headed hydrangeas and roses are perfect complements to traditional room, blousy wild arrangements give any room a cottage air, and a serene cluster of delicate orchids or tray of bamboo brings a softer element to the hard edges of a modern space. Sticking to a limited color palette in flower selection keeps the room from looking chaotic. Create a Grouping of Plants A group of plants arranged by height and size can make a pleasant grouping on a side table by a window or behind a couch. Vary the species but choose plants with the same light requirements and make sure that your chosen location is appropriate. Choose plants with unique shapes, soft furry catkins or unusual insect-eaters, such as the Venus flytrap. Frame an Outdoor Scene If you have a beautiful garden view or landscape tree visible through your windows, make the most of it by using sheer window treatments that let the outdoors in; place a wall mirror across from the window to reflect the view indoors. Hanging plants and flower boxes on a porch can also be designed with the indoor view in mind. Go Vertical Use hanging plants in a living room to direct the eye upward, or hang them strategically by a window to block a less than desirable outdoor view. Decorative wrought iron ceiling hooks and wall hooks make the hardware as pretty as the plant. Or use tall plant stands or tall floor plants, like ficus or palm, to encourage a vertical focus. Define and Divide If your living room is large, you can use plants to define and separate space. Plants can be grouped a low console table or a large tall plant can punctuate a corner or anchor a seating arrangement. Photo from Flickr - "Counter decor - Warung Agus" courtesy of avlxyz . |
