Living Room Makeover: The Difference Is Color
By Jessica Stockton
Many times people live with stark white walls because they are afraid of color; actually, they are afraid of making a change that may not look as good in reality as it did in their head. People can feel especially intimidated by color in the living room, where their choices are out in the open for everyone to see. But it’s not necessary to live in a dark dingy living room or one that is totally devoid of color. With a little planning, creativity and forethought, you can choose the perfect shade of paint that will help overcome your color intimidation. What Stays and What Goes? Before you even look at paint swatches, look at your furniture and carpet or flooring. If you are keeping the same furniture, then you need to consider those colors when choosing a wall color: Ditto for the carpet. If you have hardwood floors, you have more leeway in color choice, but don’t forget to consider area rugs if you are going to keep them in the living room. Slipcovers or reupholstering are options to change the color of your furniture, but those are an additional expense. When you go to the paint store bring along a fabric sample from your living room, such as a pillow or arm cover; if you have a swatch of the carpet that can be helpful as well. Don’t pick a wall color that is identical to furniture color, or you will end up with no contrast. Consider that darker wall colors will make a room feel closer and more intimate and if your furniture is lighter in tone, it will stand out dramatically against the walls. If you want the room to feel brighter more spacious, pastel colors such as light blues, greens or yellows can achieve this. In this case, darker tones in the furniture and wood will stand out. Accent colors in pillows, throws, window treatments and area rugs can add contrast and drama in any color scheme. How About an Accent Wall? It’s also possible to add a bolder stroke of color on just one wall making it a focal point. Or go for a subtle effect by choosing a color that is just a shade or two darker than the rest of the room. Wallpaper can be used as an accent on one wall by bringing the background color of the paper to the remaining walls. Color Choices When deciding on paint colors realize the color will look different at different times of the day and the florescent lighting in a store will be much different than the soft lighting in your living room. Before deciding on a color and having it mixed, bring home several swatches of a color and look at them in your lighting at different times of the day. For the best results, narrow your choice down to two or three colors and have them mixed in quart rather than gallon size. Paint a good size box of each color side by side on different walls and compare them at different times of the day before making your final decision.
