Kitchen Decorating with Vases
By Jessica Stockton
Vases are often overlooked as decorating accessories, but they can add a punch of style and color wherever needed. In a kitchen, wall vases and glass or metal vases can be used as accents and centerpieces to define your particular style. Here are a few ideas for incorporating vases in the décor of the kitchen, adding doses of color and style wherever they are needed. Versatile Metal Wall Vases Wall vases are often a perfect accompaniment in a kitchen because they will fit the narrow spaces that are often found where cupboards end, between windows or beside a pantry door. These small spaces may present a dilemma because they are too small for most wall art but look empty and uninviting if left unadorned. Select metal wall vases or wall pockets that can be used on their own or filled with dried natural or silk flowers or artificial trailing vines that can be changed seasonally. On larger wall spaces, metal wall vases can be combined with candle wall sconces and other wall art to create a grouping or focal point. Painted metal wall vases can be found in every size – from small and round to long and tall – so they can fit any need. Smaller wall vases are convenient for hanging beside the wall phone or in any work area in the kitchen where they can discreetly store pens and notepad, rubber bands, twist ties or any small items you need at hand. Clear and Colored Glass Vases Collections of glass vases of varying heights, colors and styles can be happily commingled in a sunny kitchen window, catching light as would a prism. Unite disparate groups of vases by randomly repeating a single favorite bloom here and there, such as a daffodil in spring or a daisy in summer. They’re also handy to hold a handful of fresh herbs cut from the garden. Vintage Metal and Silver Vases Make a statement in a traditional, country or French country kitchen with etched silver trays and vases that can create an interesting display on a countertop or buffet server. Trays and vases can be found at affordable prices in antique shops and flea markets and you can use them to display flowers or intermingle them with teapots and teacups for a proper English cottage look. Create a Centerpiece Vase Make an easy centerpiece for the kitchen table with a large glass vase filled with fresh flowers. Heavy fragrant peony blooms are too beautiful to leave in the garden; add their fresh white, pink or claret nodding blooms to a scarlet red clear glass vase. Fresh flower arrangements are easy to create by adding marbles to the bottom of the vase or using a flower frog, which is a glass or metal insert that holds flower stems in place. For something different that lasts a long time, grow a living centerpiece. Cover the bottom of a clear glass vase with decorative marbles, clear glass stones or colored aquarium gravel. Add water to within a few inches of the top and add a spider plant or peace lily after all soil has been thoroughly washed from the roots. To maintain the plant, keep the roots trimmed, change the water and clean the inside of the glass as needed. Also add water soluble plant food regularly according to product label instructions.
