Kitchen Decor: Decorate the Space above Cabinets
By Jessica Stockton
A kitchen that has space between the upper cabinets and the ceiling presents an opportunity to add style and decorative impact. In some kitchens the space may be several inches and in newer homes that have ten foot walls, the space may extend to several feet. Here are a few ideas to give this space a designer look that suites the decorative style of your kitchen. Bird-Inspired Decor Decorative birdhouses are versatile accents that will work with many different colors and styles. They are easy to use with farmhouse, country, cottage or garden style kitchens, but you will also find stone birdhouses with nautical inspired themes and whimsical designs that can complement any traditional or eclectic style. Every color and finish is available, from wood to metal, stone, concrete, porcelain and ceramic. Birdcages, both vintage and new, can be mixed in with birdhouses or used alone. The open nature of birdhouses add architectural interest and you’ll find them in painted wood, matte finish wire and brass and other shiny metal finishes. Try white and pastel painted birdcages to accent a shabby chic theme. Black and dark matte finishes are terrific accents for kitchens with a contemporary or Asian inspired vibe. Enhance birdhouses and birdcages with nature inspired décor to complete your display. Artificial branches, wreaths and vines, as well as flowering branches can be changed to suit the season. Bird figurines and statuary in stone, porcelain or metal will help you create visual balance and appeal. Basketry Baskets with natural or painted finish offer many ways to incorporate accent colors and introduce texture. Lined or unlined, baskets can enhance any decorative style or theme. Add artificial vines, blooms or foliage and change it with the seasons for a kitchen that always looks fresh and timely. Baskets also coordinate easily with other accents placed above the cabinets or throughout the kitchen and living space. Vintage Tins & Other Collectibles A collection of vintage tins will add color, pattern and height to the area above the kitchen cabinets. Create a display united by color, pattern, shape and size. Weave artificial foliage, blooms or vines around the base of tins and let it drape gracefully over the top of the cabinets. Vintage tins look very attractive when displayed with baskets or other vintage items such as enamelware, tin ware, ironstone pottery or figurines. Glass Bottles, Urns and Vases Charmingly shaped glass bottles in cobalt blue and other deep colors will add brilliant splashes of color above kitchen cabinets. Group them in interesting arrangements, varying heights and sizes. Large jug style bottles can be laid on their side in shallow areas or arranged in dramatic clusters in taller spaces. Urns and vases can also be displayed on top of kitchen cabinets. Tall spaces in a Tuscan or French country inspired kitchen can be adorned with old world style urns and vessels; let their verdigris or patina finishes complement kitchen colors. Light the Space If your kitchen has directional track or recessed eyeball lights that can be directed where desired, use them to highlight the display above your cabinets. Pot lights that can be discreetly set directly on the top of the cabinets or rope lighting can also be used and wired to a wall switch. Rope lighting that is longer than length of the cabinets can be woven around display items to create up lighting that will highlight every nuance of your arrangement. Up lighting is especially effective above upper cabinets that have crown molding as you will be able to see the illumination without seeing the lighting fixtures.
