Kid-Friendly Decor: Use Toys as Wall Art

By Brenda Reeves

While framed art or posters are great wall art ideas for any room, why not use a toy collection as kid-friendly wall decor? Use toy collections as design inspiration for a child’s bedroom or playroom: They offer a ready-made color palette and design theme; plus, using toys as wall art helps cut down on clutter in the room and provides storage and display all rolled into one.

How you choose to display the toys will depend on whether the toys are actually played with or whether they are strictly part of a collection. If there is a “big kid” in the family, many of these same ideas can be used to display a sports memorabilia or other collectables in a media or game room.

Dolls and Action Figures
If your child has a collection of doll and action figures they can be displayed on shelves: Collectible or heirloom items in their original boxes can be displayed on a wall shelf that is mounted about 18 inches below the ceiling. Take the full height of the tallest toys or boxes into consideration and adjust the height of the shelf accordingly. For a large collection, run a shelf around the entire perimeter of the room and organize the items in an eye-catching arrangement.

Toys that are played with, can be displayed on lower shelves where kids can reach them. Or, paint a piece of pegboard in a bright fun color and mount it on the wall; use plastic pegboard clips to hang the doll or figures on the board.

Train and Car Collections
As with action figures, a shelf that runs the perimeter of the room or a wall or two is a great way to show off collectible model cars and trains. An electric train can be set up to travel on its tracks on a platform built all around the upper perimeter of a room for a really cool effect.

For car collectors, mix in other wall art, such as posters or drawings of favorite cars. Artfully arrange floating walls on the shelves to highlight favorite models. Track lighting is a good way to draw attention to the collection.

Cartoon and Movie Characters
If your child has a collection of figurines or dolls from a favorite movie, use the movie or cartoon as the design inspiration for the entire room. From framed posters, to curtains, bedding, lamps, murals and decals, turn your child’s favorite fantasy to life right on his or her bedroom walls.

Sports Memorabilia
Use favorite teams, team logos and jerseys, sports card collections and posters, hats and sports equipment to create a room any sports nut would love, whether he’s nine years old or approaching fifty!

Game Boards
Use a favorite game as a theme for the room, painting the room in game board colors and tracing icons and images from the game right onto the walls. Actual game boards can be mounted on the walls or used as photo frames or bulleting boards.

Stuffed Animals
Corral a boatload of stuffed animals with a toy net in one or more corners of the room. A few favorites can be kept on the bed while the rest take a break in the toy net. A toy net also lets your rotate stuffed animals from time to time so there’s always something new and fun in the room.

Safety First
Whatever toys you decide to display, remember to keep safety foremost in your design. It is essential that shelves and heavy or bulky items are securely mounted to the wall to prevent accidents and potentially serious injury.

Sounds like a good idea. Also adds a little to the dusting.
