How To Remove Old Wallpaper

By Jessica Stockton

Wallpaper is a fast and inexpensive way to change the look of a wall and an entire space. You can choose from a variety of designs, from a simple traditional wall design to any whimsical wallpaper design. Aside from that, you can change your wallpaper any time you want.
However, have you ever tried removing old wallpaper and found yourself left with small pieces of it still stuck on the wall? Well, you do not have to suffer this fate anymore! There are several ways you can remove old wallpaper from your wall.

One way to remove wallpaper is through perforation. To do this, use a tool referred to as paper tiger, which mechanically scores the wallpaper. This tool looks like a puck with wheels full of sharp teeth. With a counterclockwise or clockwise motion, roll the paper tiger onto the wallpaper. This will cause tiny holes on the wallpaper’s surface without scratching the wall surface. Once all of the wallpaper has been perforated using the paper tiger, use a drywall knife to scrape off the old wallpaper, using the perforated holes as a guide.
Another way to remove old wallpaper is by simply soaking the paper with water. With a sponge, brush water through the wallpaper until it is soaked through. Soaking the wallpaper with water will loosen the glue and eventually loosen the wallpaper. Once the wallpaper has been soaked and the glue has loosened up, peel off the old wallpaper.
When using this method, do not forget to line the floor with canvas or old newspaper to protect your floor from the excess water and the peeled off wallpaper. And you should note that this can not be used with vinyl lined paper. Since vinyl is not porous, water will not penetrate the material.

You may also make use of wallpaper stripping products that may be purchased from any home improvement store or hardware store. To use wallpaper stripper, mix the product with warm water or a solution of warm water and vinegar, as directed on the label. Then use this solution and spray it onto the wallpaper. The chemicals in the product will react to the adhesive’s molecular bond. It may take multiple applications of the product to completely take off the old wallpaper. Once the chemical has reacted with the adhesive then use a drywall knife to remove the old wallpaper.

Steaming is another method that may be used to remove old wallpaper and works much in the same way as water, but it has one major drawback. When using steam to remove old wallpaper, caution is recommended since steam may damage the drywall underneath the wallpaper, resulting in an uneven wall surface and even more costly repairs.

Removing old wallpaper does not have to be difficult. There are several easy and inexpensive methods you can do to do just that. It is an a do-it-yourself project that you can do over the weekend.
