How to Pair Red and White Wines with Food
By Jessica Stockton
TThe pairing of food with wine has always been a practice that has brought about great deal of culinary pleasure. In previous years, there were many guidelines on what you should and should not do when pairing certain wines with certain food. Nowadays, food and wine pairing is as experimental as the creation of fine wine itself. Food and wine pairing is often approached with fear. However, such is not necessary; here are some basic guidelines you can follow. Most people revert to the classic and traditional combination when it comes to pairing food with wine. Although there have big changes when it comes to pairing red or white wine with certain food items, you may still opt to pair white wine with fish and red wine with meat dishes. However, with this classic combination there are flexibilities as well. Seafood dishes are not necessarily paired with white wine. Depending the ingredients used and the type of seafood dish, either white or red wine can be paired with the dish and still bring a wonderful, and perhaps unexpected taste to the mouth. You may also decide on what wine to pair through taste. To a trained palette, certain tastes can be picked up from a specific wine – if the wine is peppery, if it has a hint of cinnamon, orange, or vanilla, and so forth. These are just some of the things you should consider when choosing a wine from your metal wall wine rack. However, you do not have to be a wine connoisseur to determine what specific tastes are in a wine. If you are unsure, you can always ask assistance from a trained associate in a wine store. Another factor that you should consider when choosing a particular wine to be paired with food is the acidity of the wine. There are certain foods that brings out the acidity of wine while others bring out the fruitiness or sweetness of wines. If you will be serving food that is a little sweet then try to pair it with wines that are a little bit drier than the dish. Foods with acidic ingredients such as lemon, oranges or other citrus fruits, can be paired with wines that have an acidic hint. Some Bordeaux wines are good for this type of pairing. You may also need to determine how light or heavy a dish is. Choose a wine that can hold up to heavy dishes so that the taste of the food doesn’t overpower the wine. Light meals go very well with fruity wines since the food can bring out the taste of the wine. When pairing wines with food, remember that it is not an exact science. There are certain classic pairs that will never go wrong. For example, white wine is great with fish and red wines are generally good with meats, and sweet wines complement desserts. But don’t be afraid to accommodate your own personal taste and preference. If you feel that a certain wine is great with certain dishes than by all means pair those two. To practice your palette, throw a wine tasting party and serve you several dishes and different bottles of wine. Your metal wall wine rack is more than just wall décor: Open and enjoy a few bottles in the company of good friends!
