How to Liven Up Your Living Room with Tuscan-Inspired Designs

By Jessica Stockton

Does your house have a one-theme, monotonous, and boring interior design? Or does it have so much space that you want to break the monotony of the surroundings in the living room?

Consider a Tuscan-inspired theme to liven up your decor. By playing with earthy tones, such as natural stone and terra cotta, you will bring the beauty of the sun-drenched Italian countryside into your home. The warmth and comfort that nature gives will be transported inside the walls of your house.

Most Tuscan homes have various kinds of natural stones plastered on walls and even on the floors. Marble is considered as a very important element. In fact, it is a favorite flooring material. Other homes have stucco on their walls. The Tuscan-inspired theme is characterized by a lot of texture. Stonewalls are often kept as they are: naturally rough and interesting. Nowadays, there are textured wallpapers available that could give this kind of effect.

Add an iron wall grille to break the monotony of long walls. You can also hang decorations that have rustic design and earthy quality. Anything that has Mediterranean influence – from wrought iron candle wall sconces to framed ceramic tile - can be used to as an accent on flat walls.

If new furniture is in your budget, anything made of wood that has an antique quality shall be a welcome addition to your new Tuscan theme. The ambience that you’re creating should reflect the Old World gentility.

Most Tuscan homes use flooring materials that are richly colored and naturally textured. Examples are terracotta tiles, hardwood planks, and natural stones, like marble. You can choose the colors to give character to your living room. Common shades of terracotta tiles are brown, brick-red, and red orange. Surfaces are rustic, polished, and hand-made.

Hardwood planks can be installed over concrete flooring. You can choose any color shades: from light oak to dark mahogany. Other materials like bamboo and cork for your floors are also available. Granite and marble are natural stones, which are popular flooring materials in Tuscan-inspired homes. These are also a popular material for kitchen counters and shower cubicles.

Even with a shoestring budget, you can still give your living room a Tuscan facelift. Spread rustic-colored mats and rugs on the floor. Place big clay pots or ceramic jars with green indoor plants in some corners of the room.

Add accessories that are dark-colored and have earthy tones; like candles, wood sculpture, and fabric décor made from burlap or abaca fibers. Hang paintings that are framed in dark wood. Mosaic artworks are good alternatives; especially when you’re adding color and texture to wooden joints and shelves.

You should be able to liven up your living room all by yourself. Just keep in mind that most Tuscan-inspired decorations are based on the sun, the hills, grapevines and the bounty of the earth, and natural stones.
