How to Install a Laminate Wood Style Floor

By Brenda Reeves

Installing a new laminate wood style floor is within the reach of most homeowners who have a weekend to invest in a home improvement project. Laminate flooring works well throughout the house, particularly in kitchens due to its durability and easy maintenance.

First Things First
When you are getting ready to install your new flooring the first thing you should do is to take out the existing baseboards. Then carefully measure the room, so that you can order the proper amount of flooring. Calculate the size of the room to figure out the number of boards that you will need to cover the floor. Purchase at least one extra box of laminate boards to account for any errors or miscalculations. You may also have some waste depending on the shape of your floor. After you purchase your flooring, bring it home and let it stand for a few days in the room where it will be installed. Letting it rest in the room for a while lets the material acclimate to the temperature and humidity.

Prepping the Surface
Before beginning to install your flooring material, you must prepare your surface by sweeping it thoroughly. You do not want any debris to be trapped under your new flooring. Next you will install the underlayment, and make sure to carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions. Now, beginning with the longest wall in the room, you can begin to install the initial row of laminate with the tongue facing into the room. Always use spacers between the floor boards and the wall to allow for expansion during warmer or more humid weather. As you begin the second row, make sure to stagger the seams in the boards. When you reach the end of a row, if the piece that you trim off is longer than eight inches, then you can use it to start your next row; otherwise, you will have to begin with a new piece.

Sticky Facts
While some brands of laminate flooring need glue, others do not. If the flooring that you are installing needs glue, cover the groove of the board with glue, slide the pieces together, and tap in place with a wooden mallet. Once the rows are snugly fit together, you can wipe away any extra glue with a damp cloth. Then continue on in the same fashion.

Doorway Decisions
As you are installing your flooring you will undoubtedly run into a few obstacles along the way. For example, you will have heat and air registers and doorways to contend with. You will need to notch the flooring around doorways and trim boards to fit around register openings. Continue installing until you are up to the last row; you may have to cut your final row to fit. Trim the laminate lengthwise to fit the remaining space, and use your wooden mallet to tap it into place.

If you glued your floor as you were laying it, you will have to let it dry for about twelve hours. By letting it dry all of the way before using it, you help to make sure that everything stays in place until it is completely set. Then you can reinstall your molding and door thresholds, and your flooring project is complete.
