How to Display Groups of Paintings

By Jessica Stockton

One of the best ways to decorate a room without taking up considerable space is with a painting. Paintings can add life to a dull room without much cost, and fit in any room regardless of the available space. For those that enjoy collecting artwork or simply want to show off a few pieces, here are several effective ways to display groups of paintings without creating eye clutter.

Display Paintings on Flat Surfaces
When you have groups of paintings – especially paintings that are all of similar size – leaning them against a wall on top of a flat surface such as a dresser or display case is a great way to create a dynamic grouping. This works especially well if there are no other decorative objects on the furniture to compete with the paintings.
Another option is to stick these paintings on the mantle of a fireplace. The fireplace is a natural focal point and displaying your artwork atop the mantel draws instant attention to the paintings. This method is effective for creating asymmetrical groupings to enhance a casual decor, such as a breezy nautical look or charming cottage space.

Hang Your Paintings on the Wall
The most common place to display a painting, of course, is on the wall. Creating attractive groupings, however, can be slightly tricky. You do not want to make the wall appear too busy, but at the same time you want to create a cohesive arrangement with the paintings are related to each other in some way.

When displaying a group of paintings strive to create balance. Your first step should be to place the paintings roughly at eye level, so that the paintings where they can be best appreciated. Your next step will be to make sure the paintings are spaced equally apart from each other so that everything is parallel and in proportion. Even spacing creates a formal, balanced look and you can arrange pictures evenly spaced in horizontal or vertical patterns or in a grid.

Asymmetrical arrangements lend a more casual air to a space but balance is still important: A larger painting can be balanced by two smaller paintings or two smaller pieces of wall art. The irregularity of an asymmetrical placement can draw even more attention to a work of art and the placement itself becomes part of the art.

Additional Tips on Grouping
• Paintings can be grouped by any kind of criteria, such as color, theme or artist. They can also be given a common thread by repeating the same matting and frame throughout the arrangement. You can also group your paintings by something a little more subtle, like country of origin, which will allow you to highlight the paintings in conversation and make the grouping more interesting overall.
• When vastly different colors and styles are inevitable, try organizing them in a more unique way. For example, if you have one large painting, 2 medium sized paintings, and 2 smaller paintings, consider placing the large painting in the middle and alternating the additional 4 paintings on the corners. Once again you will be creating a unique and balanced design that will spark conversation and draw attention to your paintings without overpowering the eye.
