How to Decorate Large Walls

By Jessica Stockton

Do you know that every room has a large canvas? It is the blank interior wall inside your home or your office, where you can express the artistic side of your personality. The decorative choices for wall art and all their accompanying colors, patterns and styles, are nearly endless.

Here are some creative art decor ideas to help you decorate your large walls:

1. Pictures. If you wanted to decorate your walls with framed photos of your loved ones, memorable places, and/or favorite pets, it is better to have those pictures enlarged so that details will be easy to recognize. This art decor idea is the simplest and the most traditional. Uniformity is the general rule of the thumb.

To avoid having a cluttered look on your wall, keep the frames uniform in size or design. For example, you can use gold-leaf frames for all pictures with similar or different sizes. Play with random placement of the frames on the floor or work table until you find the satisfactory pattern. Feel free to use any subject or theme for your pictures.

2. Paintings. Large or small paintings are classic art decor that will surely add style to your walls. Hang one large painting on the center of the wall, or arrange several small paintings in an attractive grouping Be careful not to overwhelm the wall with a painting that is too large, but also avoid a painting that is to small to get noticed. To create harmony, one or two of the bold accent colors of your room should be echoed in the artwork. For neutral and muted color themes, monochromatic paintings framed in mats with subtle contrast are a good choice.

3. Sculptures. Do something out of the ordinary on your walls by hanging two-dimensional wall sculptures. You may surround a large sculpture with smaller ones. Draw an imaginary rectangle shape on the wall and experiment with placement; create an asymmetrical grouping or a more ordered symmetrical, vertical or horizontal placement.

4. Carpets and Rugs. Persian rugs are always beautifully designed and detailed so they also make good wall decor. Keep in mind that these rugs come in bold designs and colors; so be careful to choose color combinations that complement your space. Persian rugs are quite large and can easily cover the entire wall, from floor to ceiling.

5. Unconventional Materials. Modern times have brought in unconventional but artistic wall decorations. Do not limit yourself to classical or traditional choices. A piece of driftwood, which has an interesting form, may be attached on the wall. A curio cabinet made from an old wooden box may be hanged and serve as a place to display small novelty items. Blocks made of wood may give accent to the wall and, at the same time, be used as candle stands.

6. Wallpaper Designs. Plain or patterned and flat or embossed wallpaper designs can contribute definite atmosphere to a room. Add any texture and color of your choice to banish the blankness of the walls.

7. Lights. Careful planning and arrangement of lights can create a contemporary form of wall décor art. The light beams, with different colors and brightness intensity, may display lines and patterns that can resemble an abstract painting on the wall. Pin lights are often used to highlight art masterpieces.
