How to Control Mud Room Shoe Clutter
By Brenda Reeves
A mud room is a great addition to any home. Typically part of the back entry, a mud room can store coats, outerwear, shoes and boots; by removing boots and shoes in the mud room, debris and dirt won’t get tracked all over the house. However, piles of shoes and boots can take over the mud room, making it messy and difficult to navigate. Read on for tips on organizing this space so that boots and shoes stay neatly organized. A Locker Storage System An open caddy or locker type of storage system is easy to use and you can add a caddy specifically labeled for each member of the family. The caddy or locker is simply an open box that is installed on the wall. As family members remove their shoes, they can be set into the caddy for neat and easy storage. Caddies can also be designed hold purses or laptop cases, book bags, backpacks, etc. Add hooks to hold umbrellas, keys and scarves as well as a shelf for hats or other items; just be sure that the caddy has enough clearance at the bottom for shoes. Clearly Contained Another option is to use clear storage containers to house boots and shoes. It’s best to have at least two bins for this method – one to contain muddy shoes and the other for everyday shoes that aren’t muddy. Each bin should be labeled so that family members will know which shoes go into which bin. It is best to not put a lid on the bins so that odors and moisture won’t get trapped. In a high visibility area, leave the lid ajar so that air can circulate or leave it off unless visitors are coming. Shoe Rack Storage Specially designed shoe racks are handy for keeping shoes organized and off the floor; they also allow air to circulate inside the shoes, which can greatly help to reduce stinky odors. A rubber tray under the shoe rack can catch anything that drips off the shoes; then just hose if off outside as needed. Over-the-door type shoe organizers are not a good choice for a mud room because mud, moisture and melting snow will collect in the pockets of the organizer making a mess that’s hard to clean. General Cleaning Keeping a mud room clean is perhaps the biggest part of the challenge because even with cubbies, shoes racks or containers, dirt and debris will inevitably end up on the floor and the container system itself will get dirty. The best approach is to clean the room regularly to keep it under control. Vacuuming, sweeping and damp mopping are the easiest methods for maintenance, but you should also enlist help from family members assigning daily or weekly chores to the kids so that the room stays at least presentable. Taking a few minutes to teach them how to keep the room clean can mean more free time for a busy parent in the long run. Photo credit to hayesandjenn . |
