How to Add Light to a Dark Bedroom
By Jessica Stockton
Up-to-date decor schemes have seen darker and more dramatic colors being used in all areas of the interior, including the bedroom. Even though deep shades can have a reassuring effect that might be desired for the bedroom, too much darkness can cause the room to feel and look too narrow. When selecting a color for your walls, keep in mind that the color swatch or paint chip may look different under brilliant store lighting than it really will when you get it home. Buying some sample jars of paint in order to test out the colors on your walls prior to settling on a color is an intelligent move. Of course, you can invariably paint over a color that turns out much duller than you expected, but remember that you will have to use several coats of heavy, tinted primer to keep the dark color from showing through the lighter one. But possibly you would opt not to paint. There are other choices that can be used to lighten up a bedroom that is too dark. You can add contrasting colors to keep darker colors from appearing to be too overwhelming. You can use white as a color to supply some visual tension in a darkly colored or poorly lit room. Adding color is another great option to think about. Complementary colors on the color wheel are right across from one another; for example, green and red or blue and orange. Color will add more visual interest to a room that has too much of one dark color and you can add a neutral to the mix for transition; for instance, green, red and tan. Light plays another major role in the perceived darkness or brightness of a room. By not blocking the windows with massive window treatments or curtains, you can allow natural light to permeate the room. Task lighting, general lighting, and accent lighting are the three types of lighting that every room in the home should optimally have. Overhead lighting, table lamps and floor lamps are considered to be general lighting. Wall sconces for candles or bedside reading lamps can be taken as task lighting. A dark room will need more lighting than a room with light colors because darker colors absorb more light. •Vanity mirrors and free standing mirrors are great ideas for wall decor in darker rooms due to the fact that they reflect the available light and amplify it. Add softness and natural beauty with wall vases filled with greenery and graceful blooms. •Use white or light bedding and choose artwork in the same light tone to produce direct contrast with the walls. The dark tones on the wall will make your artwork pop. •You can reduce the visual clutter in a darker room in order to make the space feel more open. Anything busy within the room will be more eye-catching. So, keep accessories to a few well-chosen pieces and keep laundry, prescription bottles and mail in its place.
