Guest Room Style: Three Elegant Options that Say “Welcome”

By Brenda Reeves

Nothing says “welcome” to an overnight or extended stay guest at your home like a beautiful, clean and well-decorated bedroom. Taking the time to create a beautiful elegant room lets your guest know that you took the time to create a comfortable space to accommodate their needs. It’s also to your benefit to have an appealing room that reflects the general style of your home, especially if your family uses the room as a home office, reading or television room when guests are not visiting.
No matter what style you choose for decorating the guest room, creating a “gender neutral” space is a very smart way to go: This simply means that the room is appropriately decorated for either men or women. The room can be elegant and stylish without being too frilly or feminine.

Here are three elegant styles that you may wish to consider for your guest bedroom.

Style Choice #1: A Serene Spa-Inspired Room
A spa-inspired room will invite your guest to relax and unwind. Start with a soothing neutral color palette in calming shades like sea green, soft aqua blue or pale buttery yellow. Choose simple but high quality bedding for maximum comfort and serene style: Crisp white linens and a comforter in a muted shade of green or blue are good choices; choose high quality sleeping pillows and keep decorative pillows to a minimum to reduce clutter in the room. Nature inspired window treatments, such as bamboo shades topped with natural linen curtain panels, maintain the peaceful vibe. Natural wood wall art, simple framed leaf art or botanical prints and lightly scented candles add to the ambiance. Keep table top accessories minimal and discreet and provide a small basket filled with scented body lotion and linen spray for a thoughtful touch.

Style Choice #2: A Guest Room with Vintage Appeal
Think of a historical Bed & Breakfast Inn when decorating a guest room in this style. Rich striped wallpaper in burgundy and cream with cream colored woodwork throughout the room sets the backdrop. A highboy dresser and poster bed in a deep glossy cherry wood finish adds gleaming sparkle to the room that is augmented with classic candlestick lamp bases and a featherbed comforter atop the bed. Tone-on-tone textural fabrics add interest without an over-reliance on pattern. Reproduction prints and paintings of classic subjects and landscapes add authenticity. Be sure to include a stack of leather-bound books along with a comfortable chair and footstool for reading and relaxation.

Style Choice #3: Sumptuously Elegant
If you really want to go over the top, choose beautiful carved furniture and rich sumptuous bedding made of satin and silk and choose high-thread count Egyptian cotton for the sheets and pillow cases. Add an inviting chaise lounge by a window and frame the window in elegant window treatments made of brocade fabrics. Tasteful fleur de lis wall decor, classic landscape or still life paintings and a vase of fresh flowers on the nightstand are finishing touches.

Very nicely done, Brenda! Sure would have liked to have seen some more pics representing these different styles of guest rooms though...

Hi James,

Certainly if I had more pictures I whould have attached them. Unfortunately, that's the only available I have.

Best wishes,
Brenda

Brenda, such beautiful scenes your descriptions painted for me. I wonder that a guest might want to stay and stay and stay. Won't do for boring uncle Tom! lol

Hi Laraine,

I liked that about 'boring uncle Tom'. Perhaps, you are right.

Best wishes,
