Fun Designs for your Home Office

By Jessica Stockton

With the maturation of technology more and more people have the opportunity to work from home at least for part of the time. As a result of this new working trend, home offices have become commonplace. Where there are no extra rooms to convert into a home office, room corners, closets and coffee tables are being commandeered to fulfill the office space requirement. Here are some beautifully creative ways to add an office workspace to your home.

Get Down with Funky and Hip
If your aesthetic tends towards the world of imagination, then this style will work perfectly for you. While you may be a creative type like an artist, you may also choose this space if you are a rocket scientist who draws inspiration by being surrounded with color and fantastical creations. This completed look will resemble something like Willy Wonka meets Alice in Wonderland with a delightful flow of shapes and colors throughout the space. Your theme can include every color on the color wheel, or you can keep it to a tight color palette and explore patterns, or you can do all of the above. There are really no rules at all for this room as long as it feeds your creative side. Grab your brush and paint everything that you can see. Virtually any surface can be painted nowadays if properly primed. Accessorize with shapes and colors, and use color and pattern to group items or define spaces within your funky and hip office.

A Nod to Mid Century
If you grew up in the sixties, then it is hard to picture this era as retro, but it definitely is. Inspired by the Eames chairs, or any one of the sets of the Mad Men series, this era uses natural elements and shapes juxtaposed against a mass produced element. Give yourself a clean backdrop of white and accent with glossy finishes and bold colored accents drawn from a roll of Lifesaver candies. If you have original pieces of furniture from this era, they will make a beautiful addition to the office. If you do not, then check thrift stores and flea markets to pick up selected furniture pieces from this era. If you cannot find any Mid Century pieces then you can always furnish your room with a newer piece of furniture that is inspired by the era with clean, sleek lines. Find pieces with bold lime green or acid orange, then incorporate other pieces with clean, curving lines and slick, shiny surfaces and you will capture the essence of a Mid Century room.

Looking for a Hide-Away
Many people do not have the space to devote an entire room to a home office. If this is your design challenge then you can make good use of one of the many styles of hide-away desks that are available at furniture retailers today. They come in a whole range of styles, finishes and price points. These desks help keep your room clean and uncluttered by keeping all of you papers, computers and work items tucked out of sight. Usually a cabinet design with doors that simply close to hide the mess looks great in any style of room. You can also use a roll top desk to achieve this same effect while making a great design statement.

Spacious and Ultra Modern
If you prefer clean and contemporary lines with a minimalist feel, then a streamlined modern office would suit your style. Starting with a pale neutral or stark white background, hang a large piece of art on the wall for an instant focal point. This style lends itself particularly well to a small space because by keeping it uncluttered and open it will appear visually larger. Keep lighting bright to reflect high gloss finishes on everything from walls to your desk. You will end up with a bright energetic room that is comfortable and easy to work in.

Mixing Artistic with Comfort
Combining modern and vintage in a single space creates an eclectic room that is warm and inviting. This design is perfect for a home office used by a crafter. With warm colors the room invites you to settle in and enjoy your time crafting. A neutral backdrop creates a blank canvas in which you can create magical things.
