Food for Decoration in your Kitchen

By Jessica Stockton

What could be better to use for design inspiration in your kitchen than food? It belongs in the kitchen, and it is colorful. There is also something about food that makes a house feel like a home. So when you are thinking about updating the look of your kitchen, think about pulling your inspiration straight from the foods that you prepare there.

Food in a Basket
One of the most obvious choices for kitchen design is using fresh produce. Simply fill a bowl with the colorful bounty of the garden and set it in the center of your table. Or the same bowl of veggies and fruit would make a lovely countertop display. Since a bowl of food is essentially living art, it will be constantly shifting and changing. Another great thing about using food to decorate is that it provides a handy, healthy option for anyone looking for a snack.

Glass and Pasta
You child knew that pasta is an art form unto itself when they fashioned you a macaroni necklace in first grade. Learn from the little ones and fill clear glass containers with different shapes and colors of pasta. This is a great way to spruce up your countertop, and it keeps your pasta handy for cooking as well.

Spice Rack
Spice racks are a great way to add a little flavor to your kitchen décor. Most spices are beautiful to look at, and when you hide them in your cupboard, you are losing that organic beauty in your kitchen. Displaying your spices can be as simple as assembling all of your spices in a basket display on the counter. Of course there are hanging racks and clever spice jar displays, but you can get just a beautiful of an effect creating your own. You may want to collect baby food jars, cover the tops in fabric and use them to display your spices.

Wire Baskets
Wire baskets suspended from the ceiling are a great way to display colorful fruits and vegetables in your kitchen. You can use a tiered basket to display the fruits and vegetables that you eat often, and by having it out in the open, you encourage your family to enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the day.

Cookbooks
Your cookbook collection is a great way to add a little color and interest to your kitchen wall; simply copy the covers on a color copier, frame and hang. Or you may want to display your cookbooks on a counter or tabletop. Keep your favorite cookbooks handy so that you have easy access to them; you may even want to begin a collection of vintage cookbooks.

Another inexpensive but colorful idea for your kitchen walls is to display pictures of food; if you like you can introduce some flowers to the mix. You can find beautiful colorful prints that are suitable for framing in old coffee table books that you can pick up at flea markets or thrift stores for next to nothing.

The wonderful thing about using food as a decoration and as an inspiration for decoration in the kitchen is that it is a natural complement to your kitchen décor, and it is practical and easy to incorporate into your kitchen decorating scheme.
