Five Health Benefits of Wine
By Jessica Stockton
We’ve always know that wine tastes great and is a great accompaniment to many foods. Now many recent studies show that there are many health benefits from drinking both red and white wine. According to studies, red wine has anti-aging effects largely because of the skin or pit used in making red grapes. Just like the skin of cranberries or blueberries, the skins of red grapes contain a chemical called Resveratrol. This chemical has an anti-oxidant characteristic that provides several health benefits such as anti-aging. Resveratrol is a chemical released during the fermentation process when grapes are transformed into wine. Research also shows that red wine has various substances that can benefit the heart. Studies show that alcohol, particularly from wine, can reduce the likelihood of coronary heart disease. Resveratrol also helps clean the arteries from a particular type of unwanted plaque. Also in recent studies, it showed that a protein contained in grape skins can help eliminate cancer cells. The protein found, NF-kB, is situated in all cells’ nuclei and that drinking a glass of wine 3 to 4 times a week is sufficient to block cancer cells from feeding on the protein that they need to survive. Red wine is not the only type of wine that offers health benefits; white wine also provides certain health benefits. According to studies held at the University of Buffalo, drinking white wine can help maintain healthy lungs. The studies involved regular wine drinkers and non-wine drinkers. It showed that the lungs of regular wine drinkers are healthier than those who did not drink wine. White wine, just like red wine, also has anti-oxidants. Both red and white wines have their own health benefits. However, while both help increase the body’s level of “good” cholesterol, studies show that wine drinkers can benefit more from drinking red wine. Red wine contains more potent anti-oxidants than white wine. It also performs better at reducing blood clotting as well as lowering the levels of “bad” cholesterol. With all of these benefits, from drinking both red and white wine, you may want to consider giving yourself more options by stocking both red and white wine on your wall wine rack. However, everything should be done in moderation. So it is advisable not to drink more than the allotted number of glasses per week otherwise you may inadvertently cause other illnesses. Drinking too much wine may increase the levels of certain amino acids in the body. It is believed that increasing your intake of Vitamin B6 may counter the effects of these amino acids. Just like good food, good wine in moderation can be a good thing. So add a few of your favorite vintages to your wine wall rack and drink a toast to your good health.
