Enhancing Natural Light in a Family Room

By Brenda Reeves

There are many different methods you can use in your family room to help enhance the natural light that is already present in the room. By doing this, not only will you be adding beauty to the room, but you will also increase the overall cheerfulness of the room. Plus, by utilizing the natural light, you will also be saving energy since you will be reducing the need for ambient or overhead lighting within the room.

Use Paint to Enhance Lighting
Walls which are light in color help to reflect the natural light within a room, making the room appear brighter. White ceilings are also important, as a lot of natural light is reflected back down into the room from the ceiling.

Decorating Accessories to Maximize Natural Light
The use of mirrors in the family room is one way to naturally increase the amount of light that is reflected. Although you want to avoid placing a mirror where it will receive direct sunlight, because of the glare that can result, a well-placed wall mirror or two can really help reflect the natural light.

Window Treatments
The window treatments that you select for your family room will have a lot to do with the amount of natural light the room receives. To maximize this light, keep window treatments simple, and focus primarily on treatments which allow the maximum amount of light to shine through the windows.

One nice window treatment that offers the combination of plenty of light, along with privacy when you want it, is to use sheer window toppers in a light color such as white or cream, combined with white mini-blinds. Using this combination, you can allow the blinds to remain open during the day, letting the sunlight into the room, but still have a way to close the blinds in the evening to allow for privacy. Blinds can also be handy during the daytime when the sunlight is a bit too intense.

If you do prefer curtains, keep them as light and sheer as possible, and avoid heavy or dark colored draperies. One way of maximizing the window space is to use oversized curtain rods, extending them approximately six inches on either side of the window. By doing this, even if you do prefer to use heavier draperies, when they are open they will be only covering the wall area, instead of blocking almost a foot or more of the available window space.

Outdoor Landscaping
It can also help to consider the type of landscaping you have directly outside your family room windows. If you keep plantings low, this can keep the plants from blocking the light. If you have overgrown shrubs or a small tree outside your window, you might want to consider pruning or trimming them, to allow additional light to enter the windows.

Skylights and Other Lighting Features
If you are lucky enough to have a skylight or other types of enhanced windows in your family room, these can bring a lot of extra natural lighting into the room. However, you might need to install a retractable shade or other method of shielding the room from the sun, so that the lighting isn't too intense during certain times of the day.
