Eight Simple Guidelines to Control Changes in Wine Quality

By Jessica Stockton

In general, the longer wine sets in a bottle the better it tastes. However, some wines are meant to be opened and consumed within a certain number of years or otherwise, changes in the quality of the wine can sometimes occur. Proper care and storage of wine bottles should be observed to keep wine at their utmost quality.

To ensure the quality of your wines, make sure to place the wine bottles horizontally in your wall mounted wine racks. This will prevent the cork from drying out thus preventing it from shrinking and cracking. Dry cork will allow air to enter the wine thus detracting from the quality of wine.
Always minimize any vibration or movement of the wine once it is settled on its wine rack. Vibration can harm the aging process of wine so do not keep moving wine bottles from one place to another. That is why it is important to make sure that your wall mounted wine rack is stable.

Wines also need specific temperature for it to store properly. Always minimize fluctuations in the temperature of your wine bottles. There are certain wines that do require cool dry temperatures for proper aging; others are fine in a humid area.

However, do not be confused with the temperature required for serving wines with storing them. Some wines are great served chilled but are stored in a warm place while others should be served and stored in room temperature. A temperature of 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit is perfect for wines to age properly.

The location of your wine rack also plays a key role in preserving the quality of your wines. Try to keep the humidity of your wine rack at roughly 70 percent or place your wrought iron wall racks in an area that has this approximate humidity. Too little humidity can cause the cork to dry out, making it shrink. However, too humid an area will create mildew and mold on your wine rack thus affecting the quality of your wine.

The size of a wine bottle, although a minor factor, can also affect the quality of wine. A larger bottle has a closer air-to-wine ratio making it a preferred choice. Once the bottle is opened, however, it is important to transfer the remaining wine to a smaller bottle. Remember that air will damage the quality of your wine. Although air cannot penetrate glass bottles it may enter through the cork. Too much air can cause the wine to oxidize and wine that has aged rapidly will result in a more acidic taste.

Aside from temperature and air, light can also affect the quality of wine. Too much exposure to light can result in what is referred to as “light struck”, which causes wine to have an unpleasant smell. UV light can cause this effect so it is preferred to have incandescent bulbs rather than fluorescent lights near your wine racks.

Proper storage of wines will maintain good quality wines that you can enjoy over the years. If you are a win lover or collector, keeping your wines at its utmost quality is vital.
