Design Ideas: Adding Contemporary Flair with Wallpaper

By Brenda Reeves

Wallpaper has come a long way in recent years, with designs leaning less toward Grandma’s house and more toward bold, contemporary design. The wide variety of patterns, color, textures and materials available in wallpaper makes it a perfect decorative tool when a contemporary room design is desired. It doesn’t matter whether you are redecorating the kitchen, bedroom, living room or bath; there are wallpapers to suit every need with modern flair.

Use Wallpaper to Create a Focal Wall
Creating a focal wall in a contemporary room lets you experiment with pattern and color in a limited space; this creates excitement in the room and focuses attention where you want it. Because wallpaper with dynamic design and pattern is used on only one wall in a room, it doesn’t overwhelm the entire room.

Select a wall with strong architectural features as your focal wall: This could be a fireplace, a bank of windows or some other feature that creates interest in the room. Using wallpaper with a strong pattern or color on that wall will draw even more attention: For example, paper with vertical stripes could add height and create an impressive illusion of height. If you plan on hanging wall art on the focal wall, you may want to choose textured wallpaper with a subtle design that won’t clash with or detract from the artwork. Many textured wallpapers can be painted, so you can customize the color as you wish, or you can choose textured papers that mimic the look of leather, fabric or grass cloth.

Using Wallpaper with Paint to Customize a Contemporary Look
You can also combine wallpaper with paint to create interest or definition. For example, if your family room includes a home office on one side, the walls behind the office can be painted in a color that coordinates with wallpaper on the opposite side of the room. This defines yet coordinates the two spaces. Papering two adjoining walls and painting the two remaining adjoining walls creates an appealing unifying effect with enough pattern to be interesting without overwhelming.

Using a combination of painted walls and wallpapered walls is also a great solution when you have furniture in the room with bold modern patterns. The walls behind the furniture can be painted in a solid color to let the pattern of the furniture take center stage; then wallpaper the adjacent walls with wallpaper that complements the furniture design in color or pattern. This will unite the entire room but the patterns of the wallpaper won’t compete with the patterns in the furniture.

Which Wallpaper Colors are Contemporary?
Contemporary designs look best with pale cool colors like gray, blue or green. Neutrals such as taupe, black and white, all white or cream, are also great choices that let striking contemporary furniture or bold contemporary wall art stand out in a room. If you want the room to feel more spacious, choose light colors; deeper shades can be used when you want the space to feel cozy and intimate.

I have watched professionals hang wallpaper. It is truly amazing the difference it can make when done properly.

I couldn't help but notice the warping issue in the wood floor in your picture. Notice that the reflection of the doorway in the floor is a jagged line and the door itself is straight.

Could you cover the floor with wallpaper? Just kidding

Hi biblefreeorg,

I know what you are talking about. I noticed it as well. I used that picture because the wallpaper on it is in good harmony with the rest of the interior.

Best wishes
Brenda

I like the many moods that wallpaper creates. Your photo is lovely especially seeing the wallpaper in harmony w/ the sofa fabric and window covering... thanks Brenda!
