Defeat Clutter: Get Creative with Container Storage
By Brenda Reeves
Clutter can take over a counter, a room, even an entire home; and even if you are diligent about getting rid of things that you no longer need, you still have to deal with storing those things that you do need. Not only do you need to store things, you need to keep certain close at hand for convenience and efficiency. Getting creative with container storage can help you keep “necessary” clutter organized and tidy. Beneficial Baskets Baskets can add function and style to every room in the house and they can hide a multitude of “clutter” sins. Use a basket or two right in the entry, on a bench or table, to catch incoming and outgoing mail, keys, the dog’s leash, cell phones or anything thing that needs to come and go with you each day. In the kitchen, they can be used inside cabinets, drawers and the pantry to collect packaged foods, napkins, silverware, and uncontrollable items like cookie cutters or grilling skewers. An attractive basket on the counter or kitchen table can hold colorful fresh fruits and veggies. A wall basket by the kitchen phone is handy place to stash a pad and pen, bills, mail and stamps, turning a simple basket into a mini organization station. In the bathroom, baskets can keep cosmetics and toiletries from taking over the counter and when it’s time to clean the bathroom, you can simply move the basket and clean the sink and counter. Baskets are also handy for storing hand towels and washcloths on the counter; try a big basket on the floor to hold rolled up bath towels. Plastic or rust-proof wire baskets in the shower are a tidy solution for numerous bottles of shampoos, conditioners, facial cleaners, shaving cream, etc. Disguise Clutter with Decorative Boxes Beautiful decorative boxes are a clever ruse that hides clutter in plain sight, while keeping anything you need within easy reach. You can purchase lidded decorative boxes or you can make your own storage boxes by covering cardboard, wood or plastic boxes with wallpaper, contact paper or fabric. Use them to conceal out-of-season clothing in the bedroom or files in the home office. Minimize a Mountain of Magazines If you need to hold onto certain magazines for a while, keeping them organized and neat can be a challenge. Plastic or cardboard magazine holders that hold magazines vertically on a shelf are a stylish way to neatly organize magazines, and it’s easy to add more magazine holders as your magazine collection grows. If you’d like to make your own magazine holders, cut a cereal box to size and cover it with contact paper or wallpaper. Buy Double-Duty Furniture Whenever you have a need to buy furniture, choose pieces that offer storage in addition to their regular function; you’ll appreciate the extra storage when you get the piece home. Benches and ottomans with hinged lids offer storage for blankets, outerwear, games, remote controls, bedding or pillows. Instead of a regular coffee table, choose one with storage drawers or a sliding top to tuck necessities conveniently out of sight. For the foyer, a desk with drawers offers more functional storage than a standard table.
