Decorative Tips for a Rustic Living Room
By Jessica Stockton
Nothing feels cozier on a cold winter’s night than the interior of a rustic cabin filled with the rustic warmth of hearth and home. While you may not be able to trade in your suburban abode for a cabin in the woods, there are ways to bring the casual, comforting ambiance to any living room by decorating with rustic style. Rough, Rustic Woods The rough interior of a chinked log cabin is part of the nostalgic appeal of this style. Paneled walls, especially knotty pine or cedar planks, can help recreate this look. However, if your walls are drywall, adding faux wood beams to the ceiling can suggest the rustic ambiance of a log cabin. Then paint your walls in muted earth tones like sage green and caramel brown. A Rustic Fireplace If your living room contains a natural stone fireplace you already have the centerpiece for a rustic space. However, you can frame any fireplace with artificial stone to capture the look. Place a wildlife painting or a pair of snow shoes on the wall over the mantle and add rustic tin lanterns to the mantle top. A basket of split logs and a floor vase full of pheasant feathers help fill in the blanks. Rustic Furniture & Fabrics Log furniture in oak and pine will foster a rustic ambiance. Wood side tables and bent twig chairs are natural complements and choose warm, nubby fabrics in comforting shades like pine needle green, Aspen gold and crimson. Plaids, checks and natural leaf, acorn and twig motifs, as well as wildlife silhouettes, in fleece or tweedy fabrics are excellent patterns that can be introduced in upholstery, throws and blankets, pillows and window treatments. For contrast, include a smooth brown leather chair or couch with nail head trim. Cozy comfort on the floor Cozy area rugs will add softness to all the wood in the room, especially if your floors are laminate or hard wood. If your floor is carpeted, go ahead and still use an area rug to carry the cabin motif to the floor and anchor the seating area. Choose from rag rugs or braided rugs or beautiful wool rugs with a rustic motif. A faux fur rug in front of the fireplace or a colorful Native American weaved rug are details that give the room layers of rustic influence. Accent Rustic Style Lantern style lamps or wood lamps with tin shades will light the room and stay true to your style. Wildlife prints of elk, moose and bears are natural choices and they can be framed up in twig or bark frames. Or, choose a vintage painting of a fly fisherman beside a pristine deep woods lake or ski trails on a mountainside. Old wooden skis, snow shoes, fishing rods, and framed camping or cowboy prints are just a few decorative avenues you can explore. Browse antique stores and online sources for vintage Western, cabin and camping memorabilia. Photo from Flickr - "Barcelona, Rústic Vilella, Gisclareny (Cataluña)" courtesy of toprural. |
