Decorative Ideas for a More Dramatic Fireplace Mantel

Few features of a home command as much attention as a fireplace; this makes it a natural focal point and whatever decorating is done around the fireplace is going to be instantly noticed. The fact that the fireplace is such a focal magnet means that you can transform the entire look and ambiance of a room by changing the way that you decorate the mantel and hearth area. The hearth adds to the overall look of the fireplace design, but the mantel, because it is at eye level, has the most dramatic effect on the design of the room. Here are some ideas for adding style and eye appeal to your fireplace mantel. Charmed by Candlelight
Whether you are seeking a soft romantic look or desiring a bold modern statement, look to candles arranged on the mantle. Candles of different heights can be arranged in clusters inside stylish candle holders and candlesticks or grouped on trays. Surround candles with hurricanes or glass cylinders to add sparkle and depth. Or, take a contemporary approach and line up identical candles at regular intervals to create a modern, sophisticated look that complements modern art and furnishings. You can use a lot of candles on a mantel as the main decorative feature, or you can use just a few to accent other decorative accents on the mantel. For a traditional look, arrange two candles or a pair of candles at each end of the mantle. Candles can also be mounted in candle wall sconces on the wall above the fireplace and are particularly effective on either side of a metal wall art, painting or framed wall mirror. Candles are a natural accompaniment to a fireplace, supporting the glow of a roaring fire or letting you add firelight without lighting a fire inside the firebox. Personalizing with Photographs
Photographs are another natural accent for a fireplace, whether you choose current or vintage family photos, vacation photos, or photos of landscapes, beaches, barns or anything that ties in with the decorative motif of the room. Photo frames offer a great amount of style that can be used to complement both your decor and the photographs that you choose for your display. From elegant frames to those with vintage appeal, or modern sleek chrome frames surrounding a series of black and white photos, displaying a collection of photographs on your mantle lets you create a personal statement reflective of your chosen style. A beautiful floral arrangement is a classic choice for a mantel. Choose flowers that complement your decor, whether traditional, country, contemporary, Old World or eclectic. Flower colors can be chosen to create contrast or create an all-white arrangement for drama and bold style. Even if you are using silk or dried flowers instead of real flowers, change them out with the seasons. This will keep the room looking vibrant and fresh. Similar flowers can be displayed in tall floor vases on one or both sides of the hearth; just be sure that incendiary materials are not located where they can pose a fire hazard. If you prefer to “go green”, arrange a grouping of green houseplants on the mantel. Use a stack of books or decorative boxes to give height under some of the plants in the collection to create an interesting visual line across the mantle. |

The fireplace looks lovely, however if it is used ... not as lovely. I prefer a more functional, homey look. Got any of thos photos around? Would love to see them.
