Decorating Ideas: Using Baskets as Wall Art

Baskets are versatile items that can add practicality, function and beauty to any room of your home. While they are easy to use atop benches, tables or even on the floor to hold magazines and newspapers, they can be used as wall art as well. Whether used on their own or combined with other decorative elements, hanging wall baskets are an affordable way to add style and texture to any space.
The Benefits of Baskets
While rare or antique baskets can be quite pricey, everyday baskets can be very affordable: Pick some up at a garage sale, discount or dollar store. Because they are lightweight, they are safe to use on a soffit or high ledge. They come in a vast array of sizes, colors, weaves, and patterns so they work with virtually any decorative style.
Baskets as Wall Art
Flat bottom or concave baskets can be used directly on a wall to make a wall a little more interesting. Just tap a finish nail into a wall and hang a basket from the nail; you can display the inside of the basket, the outside of the basket, or even hang it from a handle. Display it as is or fill it with dried flowers. Baskets on a wall are especially handy in the kitchen; simply pull one down, place a folded napkin inside and you have a beautiful serving piece for crusty bread or tempting muffins. Baskets hung on a wall are easy to combine with other wall art. For example, Southwestern style baskets can be combined with paintings that feature southwestern deserts and canyons. Or use a large flat Indian woven basket on a wall over a stone fireplace and arrange Native American inspired candlesticks and pottery on the mantle to create a naturally beautiful vignette. Baskets on the wall also look wonderful when combined with wrought iron wall decor to accent a French Country or Tuscan look. Or choose primitive American style baskets and combine them with early American decor and accents. Baskets can even be made contemporary; simply spray paint a collection of baskets in a modern shade of lime green or tangerine, arrange them on a wall and you have an instant eye catching focal point to accent your modern decor. Hanging Baskets for Function and Fashion
Baskets with a central handle offer additional decorating options. Shaker style handled baskets can be hung from a peg rack to add an authentic quality to a country inspired decor. Large baskets with handles can be hung from rafters on a country porch or from ceiling beams to add some interest overhead. Baskets that have a flat back and a hanger, loop or handle on the back are easy to use for practical or decorative purposes. Line one with landscape fabric and soil, add colorful flowers and hang it on a potting shed or cottage door. Hang one in your bathroom to hold hair accessories or wash clothes. A flat hanging basket in the laundry room offers a convenient place to stash dryer sheets or clothespins, and in the kitchen they can be used to hold twist ties, pad and pencil, or cookie cutters. Nearly anything that can be used in a decorative or practical fashion can be displayed or stored in a basket! |
