Creating Simple Wall Decors With Leaves
By Jessica Stockton
Art is a venue to express one’s creativity. Over the years, art does not only connotes to a standard paint brush and canvas. Nowadays, a lot of non-traditional items have used to create wonderful art. Almost all homes have different types of art displayed. It can be traditional painting, a sculpture made from metal or bronze, clay art and even paper art. Another form of art that you can use in your home is through the use of leaves. Leaves are great for creating art on walls and canvasses. You can easily work with leaves and they have their own distinct design. Here are some great ideas you can use to turn simple leaves into great wall décor ideas. Paint Splatter Silhouettes This art project is a great way to involve children into art. It is fun and there is little room for mistake. To create a wall art using the paint splatter silhouette technique, first place old newspapers on the area you will be working on to make sure no paint splatters around on areas you do not want to. This also makes for easy clean up. Get a large poster board and place your leaves onto the board. It is advisable to use at most three leaves for this. Choose leaves that are big like palm leaves. Once the leaves are in place the way you like them get an old toothbrush and dip it into any color that you prefer. Enamel paint is best for this project. Hold the toothbrush near the poster board and gently run your fingers along the bristles of the toothbrush. You can use different paint colors to create an interesting color scheme or you may choose one basic color. Once the paint is dry, take out the leaves and frame the poster board. Now you have an interesting wall leaf décor that you can enjoy. Angel Feathers For this project, use magnolia leaves. Start by mixing a teaspoon of baking soda into a quart of water into a porcelain boiling pot. Put the leaves in a vessel and pour over the baking soda mixture. Let it boil for half an hour. Once it is done, set it aside allowing the leaves to cool in the solution. When the solution is cool, take the leaves out and start scraping off the green surface with a knife resulting into a nice shape of a feather. Then make another solution this time from two tablespoons of chlorine bleach per quart of water. Put the scraped off leaves into the solution and set it aside for an hour. Take out the leaves once it turns white. Rinse thoroughly with cold water. Pat the leaves dry with a washcloth then place them between paper towels and press or weigh it down with a heavy object. Put wires on the leaves to create stems and secure it with florist tape. Once you are done, frame the leaves and hang it on a wall. Iron-On Leaf Designs Another way to create great art using leaves is to iron on the leaves. Choose leaves that has great shape and of different sizes. Then choose the material where you want the leaf design to be transferred to. It can be a table napkin, table cloth, curtains, bed linens, or wall canvasses. Using bright colored crayons, color the back of the leaf. When you are done, place the colored-side of the leaf onto the material or substrate. Cover the leaf with a thin cotton cloth and press a warm iron on it for a few seconds. Lift the leaf off the material and let it rest. You now have a cool design on your material without spending too much. These are just a few simple ideas on how you can use leaves to make decorative and creative designs. You too can do these simple projects and create masterpieces that you will enjoy. |
