Creating a Country Style Kitchen
By Brenda Reeves
In most homes, the kitchen is command central. It is where food is prepared, the family gathers, and many important decisions are made. It is also where your day to day life occurs, and it is in those times as you share a meal prepared right there that your lifetime bonds are formed. Since the kitchen is so essential to our everyday lives, it only makes sense that when you are decorating it that you want it to be inviting and cheerful for your family and friends. When you think of a friendly kitchen immediately a country kitchen springs to mind. This is a homey design where materials are practical and the room is comfortable and functional. The overall aesthetic is simple, yet it is filled with family heirlooms and found objects, so that everywhere you look you find something interesting to enjoy. With its fresh and bright decor, interesting accessories and unique mix of crockery, this country kitchen is a great complement to a busy modern family’s lifestyle. As soon as you all walk out of the house, you are being pulled in all different directions, but once you are home again, you can gather in the country kitchen: It is a place that invites you to sit and unwind and reconnect with your family after a long, tiring day out in the world. When you are thinking about how you want your country kitchen to look you will first have to pick a color for your space. Country colors include barn reds, crisp whites, rich browns, soft yellows and slate blues. While you may not want to use all of these colors together, you may use some of the colors in one portion of the kitchen and other colors in another portion of your kitchen especially if you have a large kitchen with an eat-in dining area. Think about the colors that you want to use on your walls, and then consider the fabrics that you will want to use for your curtains and tablecloth. Normally a country kitchen includes a generous sized wooden table with plenty of chairs around it. You may want to include a sideboard, hutch or simple cabinets. You can also add some wicker to your space. If you are not planning to have any wicker furniture in your space, you can certainly incorporate plenty of wicker baskets into your design. If you cannot buy new furniture, you can transform it with chair cushions or paint. No country kitchen is complete without its accessories. One way to keep your accessories from getting too scattered is to choose a topic or a theme. For instance you may choose to incorporate various fruits in your designs throughout the room. So different varieties of fruit may appear on curtains, cabinet doors, stenciled on the wall, in your tablecloth, and in your wall hangings. You may even have crockery that includes your fruit theme, and as you are pulling your look together, remember to make it cohesive but not overwhelming.

Thank you for sharing this information on a country kitchen, Brenda. The image is not the same as I remember, but you brought back the memories of dining around the kitchen table. Best wishes. Frederick
