Create an Inviting Entry with a Boldly Colored Front Door
By Brenda Reeves
The color of your front door can add to or detract from your home’s appeal, but painting your front door in a bold color can be a welcome surprise for anyone who comes knocking on your front door. Depending on the color you choose, your front door can offer sophisticated elegance, an air of mystery or a cheerful greeting. Colors to Consider Move away from boring neutral colors for your front door and choose a color that underscores the style of your home. Traditional colonial homes, for example, get a classic treatment with front doors in painted in cranberry red, glossy black or deep Charleston green. Middle range colors, like terra cotta, deep gray, navy blue or eggplant can complement nearly any style of home. A yellow door is always welcoming; and bold, unusual hues, like mandarin or turquoise can give your home an unexpected, artsy look. In addition to considering the style of your home, you should consider the color of brick, stone or siding on the home, as well as colors of other exterior features like shutters or window and door trim. Of course the door color should not clash with any other colors on the home and many designers choose a color for the front door that is not used elsewhere on the house; and often it is the boldest color in the home’s exterior palette. You can also create a harmonious look by matching your front door to some other element in the front of the home, such as climbing roses or the leaves of a Japanese maple tree. Painting the Front Door The best way to paint a front door is to first remove it from its hinges and set it on a set of workhorses or other flat surface. Scrape away any peeling or cracking paint from a previous finish with paint stripper and metal scraper. If the finish is in good shape, you can just sand and clean it to prepare it for the new paint. Using a high-quality brush or roller, apply a coat of oil-based primer followed by one or two coats of oil-based exterior paint. Oil-based paint will leave a smoother finish than latex and will hold up better to outdoor weather conditions. A semi-gloss or gloss finish will be easier to clean than a flat finish. Let the door dry thoroughly before re-hanging it. If the door frame is looking shabby, be sure to paint it before you hang the door. Now Accessorize To accessorize your new door color, update it with a new doorknob, kick plate and knocker. You’ll find a great variety of hardware styles and finishes like brush nickel, brass or wrought iron. Choose hardware that is compatible with other finishes and hardware in your home for a well-coordinated look. You may also want to add house numbers and a new mailbox, as well as potted flowers and green plants, a gurgling fountain, wind chime or outdoor wall art to make your exterior entry especially attractive and welcome. |
