Create an Elegant Dining Room with Faux Marble Walls
By Brenda Reeves
Beautiful marble adds luxurious elegance to any room and while real marble may not be in your price range, faux painting techniques bring the beauty of marble within your reach. Painting faux marble walls takes some practice and expertise, and the walls of your dining room are not the place to learn the technique. If you have access to real marble, a little time spent studying the look of the stone is time well spent. A local public building may have granite floor or walls or look at realistic photographs of marble. Next, practice the technique explained below on scrap drywall painted the same color as your dining room and before you know it, you’ll have the confidence and skill to bring a beautiful faux marble finish to your dining room walls. Prepping the Walls Marble is a natural stone material; therefore you should begin with a base coat in tan, white or cream to create an authentic looking design. Choose one of these three colors based on the color of the furnishings in the room. If your walls are currently in a deeper shade, apply primer tinted with the finish shade; then roll on two coats of the base color to achieve good coverage. Allow ample time for the primer and paint to dry; refer to guidelines on the can and let the final coat dry overnight before beginning the faux finish. Marbling the Walls Since you spent some time studying marble, you already know that it’s multi-colored with gray and black flecks over white, cream or tan; and the veining runs in a diagonal pattern. Your goal is to mimic this same look on the walls. Apply a thin layer of linseed oil over the dry base coat; linseed oil will keep the paint from drying too quickly, giving you more time to work it and create the marble effect. Use a brush to apply light gray paint in different locations on the wall, and soften the edges of the paint with a rag. Dab in deeper shades of gray here and there to add a three-dimensional appearance. Keep the look of real marble in mind as you work. The next step is to add the characteristic veining of marble to the wall. Remember the diagonal pattern of real marble veining before you begin and use a fine, high-quality artist brush to paint the veins. Mixing various shades of gray will create more dimension and authenticity. You can use a rag to smudge the lines into a realistic softness at the ends; real marble never has sharp points at the ends of the veining. When using a faux marble technique, remember that a little goes a long way. Faux painting all the walls of the dining room would not only be tedious, it could look overdone. Instead, use the technique on a focal wall, on the vertical surfaces of a soffit or tray ceiling or on columns or pillars. You can even try the technique on furniture or accessories, such as a pedestal stand, to add a little elegance here and there.
