Create a Front Door Floral Display with Wire Cones

By Brenda Reeves

There are many ways to decorate a front door to give your home a boost in curb appeal and wreaths are among the most popular. However, a beautiful way to create a floral display that can be easily changed with the seasons is to use wire floral cones. Making a display from a wire cone is inexpensive and even if you have little or no experience in making floral decorations, a cone is easy to do; in fact, for most people it’s much easier to get great looking results using a cone rather than fashioning a wreath. Here are some tips to get you started!

The Base for your Arrangement: The Wire Cone
The wire cone is what will be used to support and display your floral arrangement. You can purchase a wire cone from a craft store or floral supply shop; be sure to choose one that is large enough to make visual impact but not so large that it will overpower your entry. Wire cones are not expensive, but if you have some wire materials on hand, you can make a cone yourself. They are easy to make from chicken wire, hardware cloth or wire mesh. Be sure to wear heavy duty work gloves when working with these materials to protect your hands. Roll the material into a cone shape and twist strips of metal wire along the edge to secure it; bend all sharp edges inward toward the center of the cone.

Cover this framework with durable material to disguise the wire: Outdoor grade fabric, plastic or paper coverings that are attractive and can withstand the elements are possibilities. You can also glue sheets of decorative moss to the frame, which provides a very attractive natural look. The point of the cover is to keep the metal from scratching your door while also adding an attractive look. After you have a covering in place, you can add a decorative edge with lace, ribbon or fringe to the top of the cone and tie a ribbon on the front; make a hanger for the back with matching ribbon and you’re ready to add your floral display.

Decorating your Cone with Flowers
Once your cone is ready, you can decide what type of flowers you want to decorate with. You can use real flowers if they are tucked into watering tubes, but this is too much trouble except perhaps for a special occasion. Dried flowers are also nice, especially in fall, winter and spring; spray them with floral preservatives to help them last longer. You can also use evergreens, holly, branches and pine cones for a winter display.

In most cases, silk flowers are the easiest option; simply arrange them in the cone as desired. In some cases, you may need to insert floral foam into the cone so that the flower will stay put after arranging. Be sure to change your silk flowers with the season so that don’t look obviously fake. From tulips and daffodils in spring to sunflowers and asters in fall, you’re front door will always be appropriately dressed for the season.

I really like this idea. I have some chicken wire I have wanted to use for a long time. Silk flowers will really look great for my front door.
Thanks for the idea.
