Cork Flooring is Perfect for the Bedroom

By Brenda Reeves

When you are remodeling your home, there are many options available for flooring. While carpeting, wood and tile have been options for quite a while, more sustainable options like bamboo and cork are gaining in popularity. Cork is a completely natural product, and since it is harvested from the bark of the tree, it is also completely sustainable. Since it is natural, it offers interesting colors and textures, and it can also be dyed just about any color imaginable. Cork is a natural fit for bedroom flooring because it is soft underfoot, so it is comfortable to walk on. The material also never gets particularly cold, also keeping it comfortable for padding around in bare feet. Cork is a stylish floor covering and it can add to your home's value.

If you want to install the flooring yourself, it is not any harder than installing a tile floor. However, there are a few things that are a little different working with cork that with a regular tile floor.

Get Ready to Install
Since cork is a natural product it is susceptible to changes in atmospheric conditions, so as moisture and temperature levels fluctuate, cork will react. Like wood, the best practice is to let your new cork flooring acclimate to the room where it will be installed for several days before installing it. This way the cork material has time to expand or contract reacting to the new environmental conditions, so that when you install the flooring material it will be stable.

Cork is a very flexible material, and because of this it will show any flaws in the sub flooring. So when you are preparing your floor surface for installation, make sure to repair any flaws and cracks to create a smooth surface. If installing over a concrete floor with any low spots, you will need to level it out with cement patching compound before beginning your installation. You will also want to prime your sub floor with a moisture barrier if necessary.

Laying the Floor
The planning portion of laying your cork tiles is exactly the same as it would be for ceramic or vinyl tiles. You can lay your tiles out to make sure you have the right amount of material, and you can work out any design before you begin gluing them to the sub floor. Mark a straight line in the center of the room to use as a guide to lay your first tiles, and make sure that you use an adhesive product that is designed for cork tiles. Then follow the manufacturer's directions for the tiles and the glue. Make sure that the first few tiles are adhering properly before installing all the tiles.

Finishing Up
After the floor is installed, bring in a heavy floor roller, which you can rent, and roll the entire floor. This will ensure that that all of the tiles are properly adhering to the floor and that everything is level. After rolling, make sure to stay off of the floor for a full 24 hours to give the adhesive time to fully set. Then you are ready to add baseboards and enjoy your new cork floor.
